The vibrant colours of the Grand Prismatic Spring and the bubbling mud pots look otherworldly.

Yellowstone is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. You can spot bears, bison, elk, wolves and more in their natural habitats. Or hike through the park’s lush forests and sweeping meadows to your heart’s (or feet’s) content.

5. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is a dazzling desert oasis of entertainment. Famous for its vibrant nightlife, casinos and over-the-top attractions, there’s no shortage of excitement here.

Stroll along the Strip to see world-famous hotels like The Bellagio, with its stunning fountain show, and The Venetian, complete with gondola rides. Newer, bigger, bolder hotels are added regularly, too. And, beyond the casinos, Vegas offers incredible shows ranging from Cirque du Soleil to concerts by global stars.

Why it’s important to have travel insurance for the USA

Travel insurance isn't compulsory to visit the USA. But it's still a good idea to have it.

Think about how much an unexpected incident could cost you if you weren’t covered. The USA is one of the most expensive countries for healthcare. Even minor medical emergencies can cost thousands of pounds in the USA, and serious issues could cost tens of thousands.

Having travel insurance before you go means you don't have to worry about this.

What does travel insurance cover for USA trips?

Post Office Travel Insurance can help if something unexpected happens while you’re in America. It can cover:

  • Emergency medical costs: If you get ill or hurt, we can help pay for your treatment and help you get back home. Our policies also include 24/7 outpatient support
  • Cancelling or cutting your trip short: If you have to cancel or come home early for a reason listed in your policy, we’ll pay you back for unused travel and hotel bookings up to the policy limits
  • Lost, stolen or damaged belongings: Like your suitcase, passport or money. Check the cover limits and make sure you report any loss to the police within 48 hours
  • Missed or delayed flights: If your international transport is late or you miss it (for certain reasons and with certain cover levels; always check the limits)
  • Personal accidents and legal costs: If something serious happens, we can help with legal fees and personal accident claims, up to the policy limits

You can choose our economy, standard or premier cover level, depending on how much protection you want.

What doesn’t travel insurance for USA trips cover?

Travel insurance helps with a lot but not everything. You might not be able to claim if:

  • You don’t tell us about a pre-existing medical condition when you take out your policy
  • You do risky sports like skiing, jet-skiing or mountain biking without the right cover
  • You get hurt, cause damage or lose your possessions due to alcohol
  • You break the law or go against local guidance abroad
  • You miss a flight by mistake, such as sleeping through your alarm

Always check your policy carefully so you know what is and isn’t covered.

What extra cover can you pay to add?

You can pay for extra protection if you want to include the following:

  • Gadget cover: To protect phones, tablets, laptops and other devices
  • Excess waiver: So you don’t have to pay the first part of a claim
  • Trip disruption: In case your trip is affected by Covid-19, natural catastrophes, terrorism or airspace disruption
  • Extended trip cover: If you want longer trips on an annual policy
  • Winter sports cover: If you plan to go skiing, snowboarding or similar, this must be added
  • Cruise cover: You must add this if you’re going on a cruise

Adding extras means you can match your travel insurance to your plans.

Plan your trip with the peace of mind it’s covered

Medical care and vaccinations

Healthcare in the USA is some of the best in the world, but it's also very expensive. Having travel insurance with good medical coverage is essential to avoid having to pay huge bills yourself.

  • Make sure your policy includes emergency medical expenses and transporting you home (called ‘repatriation’) if needed
  • If you’re involved in a medical emergency, call 911 for urgent help
  • Some hospitals may ask for payment upfront for treatment. If they do, contact your insurer right away to find out whether this is something they’ll cover

Vaccinations for the USA

You don't need any special travel vaccinations to visit the USA, but it's a good idea to make sure your regular ones, like tetanus and MMR, are up to date.

Recommendations can change at short notice, though, so always check the latest FCDO travel advice for the USA before your trip.

Staying safe while travelling

Here are some tips to help you stay safe and make the most of your visit:

  • Stay alert: Be vigilant against theft, pickpocketing, burglary from home or car and other street crimes. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas
  • Respect local laws: Laws vary by state. Some have strict alcohol laws, such as Utah. Others have very strict laws about smoking and littering, such as California
  • Look after your belongings: Don’t leave items unattended, keep an eye on your bags, and lock in a safe any important travel documents or cash and valuables you don’t need each day
  • Careful what you carry: Fireworks are legal in some states but not in others, so it's not a good idea to take them from one state to another. This also goes for things you might think are safe, like beer and wine
  • Cultural awareness: The USA is wonderfully diverse, but customs can differ from place to place. Some areas are very religious and conservative, while others are more liberal and modern. Even within the same state, cultural norms can change from one area to another. It's important to learn about the place you're visiting to avoid any mistakes

Driving in the USA

It might be your dream to rent an open-top car and drive down Route 66. Since the USA is so spread out, driving is often one of the best ways to get around. But remember, driving laws vary by state.

In some places, a valid UK driving license is enough to rent a car, but others require an International Driving Permit (IDP). It's a good idea to get an IDP if you plan to drive in the USA.

Speed limits are set by each state and even local areas. They can be very different in cities and on highways. Make sure you know the speed limits for the places you'll be driving. Some areas have different speed limits depending on the time of day or weather. Often, the maximum speed limit is lower than in the UK, like in Washington DC, where it's 55 mph. Always check the speed limit for the road you're on.

Your travel insurance might not cover car rentals, so you may need a separate insurance policy. This is usually included in your rental agreement, but it's always good to check.

Other travel considerations

For long trips, flying is very common in the USA and more popular than trains. That said, some people do prefer to see the USA by train, and there are tickets that combine rail and air travel. Taking the Amtrak train can be a great way to see the country's beautiful landscapes, but it might be more expensive than flying.

Public transport in cities varies. Some cities, like New York and Chicago, have very good systems. Others, like Los Angeles, have limited options. Research before you go to see if you need to rent a car.

Remember, if you're involved in an incident while under the influence of alcohol, your travel insurance may not cover you.

In the USA, alcohol in drinks is often measured by its weight instead of its percentage volume, which is different from the UK. The alcohol-by-weight is also shown as a percentage. So, a beer that reads 3.2% alcohol by weight is actually a little over 4% alcohol by volume.

Visas and ESTA

Most UK travellers need an ESTA to visit the USA for up to 90 days. Apply online at least 72 hours before you travel, as delays can happen.

If your ESTA is denied or you don’t meet the criteria to apply for one, you’ll need to apply for a US visas instead. This usually takes longer.

Key takeaways

  • Plan your dream itinerary: Explore iconic cities, breathtaking natural wonders, and unforgettable attractions, like the Grand Canyon, New York City and Route 66
  • Get the right travel insurance: Make sure your policy covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation and lost, stolen or damaged belongings
  • Prepare your paperwork: Apply for your ESTA well in advance. And check if you need an International Driving Permit for your road trip
  • Stay informed and safe: Research local laws and customs. And check the latest FCDO travel advice before you travel to avoid any surprises
  • Budget wisely: Get a feel for what everyday items like coffee, suncream and meals might cost, and plan accordingly to enjoy your time Stateside stress-free

These steps will help you enjoy a smooth, safe and memorable adventure in the USA.

Common questions about USA travel

  • Yes. Healthcare in the United States is very expensive and even small emergencies can cost a lot of money. Having travel insurance can help cover these medical costs, which can sometimes reach tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Besides medical expenses, travel insurance can also protect you in other situations. Flights can be delayed, your luggage can get lost, stolen or damaged, and tourist areas can have opportunist thieves who might target your belongings. You could also fall ill anywhere in the world, which could ruin your holiday plans.

While we hope none of these things happen to you, having travel insurance can help protect you if they do. It can cover you, those traveling with you and your belongings. If your luggage is lost, travel insurance might not replace it, but it can help you recover the costs of getting replacements up to the limits in your policy.

  • It’s important that your travel insurance for America provides good medical cover, enough to pay for any healthcare treatment you may need if you fall ill or are injured while there. Don’t underestimate how much treatment can cost there. From getting stitches to a ride in an ambulance, it soon mounts up.

The level of cover you choose should be sufficient to reimburse you for the holiday if it’s cancelled for one of the reasons set out in the policy wording. Make sure it will also reimburse you for the cost of lost, damaged or stolen belongings – so work out their value and keep the receipts handy if you have them.

Remember, for some activities or types of holiday you may need additional or specialist cover. For instance, winter sports cover for skiing, snowboarding, etc or cruise cover. You may need additional gadget cover for the devices you take on your trip.

  • If you lose your passport or it gets stolen, report it straight away via GOV.UK and to the local police. You can then apply for a replacement.
