Travel insurance for over 60s

Enjoy your golden years in style, with travel insurance helping you avoid unwanted costs.

Whether it’s a week in the sun or that trip across the world you’ve been dreaming about since your 20s, you’ve earned a break. 60 is the new 40 and the world is waiting for you.

Travel insurance helps you keep your mind on enjoying yourself and not on what might go wrong. It can protect you against unexpected medical costs, trip cancellations, lost belongings and more while you’re away.

In this guide, we explain what travel insurance covers for over 60s, how age can affect the cost and how to choose the right policy for your plans.

Can you get travel insurance if you’re over 60?

Yes, with Post Office you can get travel insurance over 60. As with any other holiday-goer, you’ll need to provide us with information about your health and travel plans. We ask this to make sure we can offer you a policy and that it matches your travel needs.

When you apply, you’ll typically be asked about:

  • Any pre‑existing medical conditions
  • Where you’re travelling to
  • How long you’ll be away
  • Whether you’re planning on winter sports or going on a cruise

Declaring your health conditions honestly is essential. If something isn’t disclosed and you later need to make a claim, your policy may not be valid.

Having a pre-existing health condition doesn’t instantly disqualify you from a policy or make it prohibitively expensive. At Post Office, we consider all medical conditions. If we can’t cover your trip due to a particular health condition, we’ll refer you to a specialist provider who may be able to help.

To find out how much your travel insurance would be with Post Office, you can get a quote online in a matter of minutes.  If you’d prefer to have a chat, you can call our UK team on 0330 123 1387¹.

For single-trip cover, we have no upper age limit. We've also written guides on travel insurance for over 70s and travel insurance for over 80s.

Is travel insurance more expensive for over 60s?

When compared with policies for younger travellers, travel insurance for over 60s is usually more expensive. This is because insurers take into account the higher likelihood of medical treatment being needed while abroad.

That said, insurance is often a fraction of the cost of medical treatment overseas. If you took a trip to the USA and were unlucky enough to be in a car accident, requiring emergency surgery, you could come home to a bill worth tens of thousands of pounds, if not more. This is where travel insurance comes in. It helps protect you from those life-changing costs should something unexpected happen.

It’s worth noting that the price of holiday insurance is not all about age. It can also rise if you:

  • Have pre‑existing medical conditions
  • Are travelling for a longer period
  • Are going outside Europe
  • Add optional extras like cruise cover

The easiest way to see what you’d pay is to get a personalised quote based on your trip.

What does travel insurance for over 60s cover?

While cover varies by policy, Post Office Travel Insurance includes the following protection. Limits will apply depending on your policy, and you won’t be covered in every single circumstance. We have our full policy information available on this page online so you know exactly what you’re covered for, and if you’re unsure about anything, you can always ask us.

  • Medical emergencies and repatriation: Cover for emergency treatment abroad and transport home if medically necessary. For less major medical concerns, you can also speak to a doctor 24/7 through your phone2
  • Trip cancellation or cutting your trip short: Help recovering certain costs if illness, injury or other insured events mean you can’t travel or have to return early
  • Lost, stolen or damaged belongings: Cover for luggage and personal items if they go missing, are stolen  or are damaged
  • Personal liability: Protection if you accidentally cause injury to someone or damage to property

Optional extras to consider

Some travellers in their 60s choose to add extra cover for specific needs, such as:

  • Cruise cover: A mandatory requirement for most cruise holidays, covering specific cruise-related incidents
  • Excess waiver: If you don’t want to pay anything to make a claim, you can add an excess waiver to your policy for an additional cost
  • Trip extensions: If you’re planning on going away for longer than 31 days and you have annual multi-trip insurance, you’ll need trip extension cover, which extends your policy to up to 60 days
  • Gadget cover: If you’re taking some gadgets with you on your trip, get gadget cover to increase your limit for things like smartphones, laptops and tablets

Annual multi-trip vs single‑trip travel insurance for over 60s

Choosing between annual and single‑trip cover depends on how often you travel. If you go away more than once in a year, annual multi-trip cover can be cheaper, and removes the admin of having to sort out insurance every time you travel.

Single‑trip travel insurance

Single‑trip cover is often best if:

  • You’re taking one holiday in the year
  • You’re travelling for an extended period
  • You prefer to insure each trip separately

It covers one trip with fixed start and end dates.

Annual multi‑trip travel insurance

Annual holiday insurance when you’re over 60 can be a convenient option if you travel more than once a year. It allows you to take multiple trips within a 12‑month period with the same level of cover. Any trips over 31 days will need additional trip extension cover.

Annual cover can:

  • Be more cost‑effective for frequent travellers
  • Reduce the risk of forgetting to arrange insurance
  • Be well suited to short breaks and regular holidays

Please note, annual multi-trip cover is only available up to the age of 75.

Travel insurance for over 60s with medical conditions

Having a medical condition doesn’t mean you can’t get insured. Over 60s travel insurance with medical conditions is available, as long as you declare your health information accurately.
When you apply for cover, you’ll be asked about:

  • Any current or past illnesses and the treatment you’ve received
  • Medications you’re currently taking
  • Any upcoming procedures or hospital appointments
  • Whether you’re on a waiting list or awaiting a diagnosis

All conditions from high blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions and joint or mobility issues should be declared. Declaring these may increase the premium, but it helps ensure you’re properly covered.

Looking for the cheapest over 60 travel insurance  with medical conditions can be tempting, but it’s important to balance cost with the level of cover provided.

Cruise travel insurance for over 60s

If you’re going on a cruise, standard travel insurance may not be enough. Many cruise operators require specific cruise travel insurance before you travel.

Cruise cover can help protect you against:

  • Missed ports or itinerary changes
  • Medical treatment onboard a ship
  • Emergency evacuation to shore

At Post Office, cruise cover can be added to your policy as an optional extra for an additional cost for any cruise that is over 3 days in duration. Your cruise holiday will not be covered unless you add cruise cover.
