Why gadget protection matters

Gadgets are a big part of our lives. Most of us need to use them every day, whether for work or keeping in touch with family and friends. And they’re important to us. They store a lot of personal information, plus they’re expensive too. So if they’re lost, stolen or damaged, it can be stressful and expensive to repair or replace them.

That’s why having the right insurance policy in place can give you peace of mind if something goes wrong, whether you’re at home, on the move or on your travels.

Here’s a breakdown of gadget insurance, home insurance and travel insurance with optional gadget cover to help you decide what’s best for you.

What cover options are available?

Gadget insurance

Spilled coffee on your laptop in a cafe or left your phone on the bus? Gadget insurance could help protect your devices while you’re out and about, as well as when you’re at home.

Gadget insurance is a specific policy that’s designed just for your devices. You can usually choose to cover single items or multiple gadgets under one policy.

This type of insurance often covers:

  • Accidental damage

  • Theft

  • Loss (depending on the policy)

  • Mechanical breakdown outside of warranty

Things to check:

  • Are refurbished gadgets covered?

  • Is there a limit on how many claims you can make?

  • Are accessories like headphones or chargers included?

What about Post Office Gadget Insurance?

Post Office Gadget Insurance is designed to protect the tech you rely on every day. It covers gadgets like phones, laptops, tablets and smartwatches against accidental damage, breakdown, theft and loss, whether you're at home or out and about.

You can insure multiple devices under one policy and choose the level of cover that suits your needs.

We also provide cover for the whole family’s gadgets, including devices belonging to children, for extra peace of mind. And you can even opt for pay-as-you-go policies, so there’s no long-term contract or commitment.

Ready to protect your gadgets?

Home insurance

Home insurance comes in two types: buildings insurance and contents insurance

  • Buildings insurance protects the structure of your home, like the walls, roof, windows and doors. It helps if something big happens, like a fire, storm or break-in

  • Contents insurance protects the things inside your home. This includes furniture, clothes and gadgets. It usually covers damage or loss caused by theft, fire or accidents inside your home

Depending on your policy, contents insurance may extend to items taken outside the home. If it doesn’t, you may be able to add extra cover for an additional cost.

Things to check:

  • The maximum amount you can claim for each item

  • If accidental damage is included or costs extra

  • Whether you need to list expensive items separately

  • If gadgets are covered outside the home or if this needs to be added

What about Post Office Home Insurance?

If you're looking to protect your gadgets at home, Post Office Home Insurance could help. Our contents insurance covers many everyday items, including gadgets like laptops and tablets, against theft, fire and flood.

But standard contents cover won’t cover you for personal belongings and gadgets you take out of the home when you’re and about. You can add optional cover for accidental damage or away from home cover, which will protect items you take out of the house. This may cost more but it’s a simple way to give you extra peace of mind for your tech, wherever it is. Please note that gadgets used for business purposes are not covered.

Always check the maximum amount you’re insured for, both inside and outside the home.

Travel insurance add-ons

Jetting off on holiday? Be it a relaxing beach break or an action-packed adventure, travelling can put your devices at extra risk of being lost, stolen or damaged. So, it’s a good idea to make sure your gadgets are covered while you’re away.

Generally speaking, standard travel insurance sometimes covers gadgets, but the claim limit can be low. If that's the case, your insurer may offer an optional gadget cover add-on. You can pay a little extra for this to increase the device protection on your policy.

Things to check:

  • The claim limit for gadgets and whether this is per device or per claim

  • If proof of purchase is needed if you make a claim

  • Whether cover applies worldwide or only in certain countries

What about Post Office Travel Insurance with Gadget Cover add-on?

Standard travel insurance only offers limited cover for gadgets:

  • Economy cover: up to £150

  • Standard cover: up to £250

  • Premier cover: up to £400

You can add optional gadget cover to your Post Office Travel Insurance for extra protection. It helps cover your devices, like phones, tablets or laptops, while you’re away.

This lets you increase the protection in your policy and can cover other tech too, with up to £2,000 per person per policy for items like camera, audio or video equipment, e-readers, sat navs and more.

How to choose the right gadget cover

When picking gadget cover, think about:

  • The value of your devices

  • Where you use them most

  • How much it would cost to replace them

Make sure you know what is and isn’t covered. It’s also worth checking if you already have cover through your home insurance, bank or mobile phone provider.

Do I need all three types of gadget insurance?

Not always. The insurance you need depends on your lifestyle and where you use your gadgets. For example:

  • If you mostly use your phone or laptop at home, contents insurance might be enough. But bear in mind that accidental damage cover at home isn’t always included and you may need to add it separately. If your gadget is worth over a certain amount (like £2,500 or more), it might need to be listed as a high-value item on your policy

  • If you take your gadgets out with you a lot, like when you're travelling to school or work, or working in cafes, gadget insurance can help if they get lost, stolen or damaged

If your gadgets are important to you and you use them in lots of different places, a mix of cover types might work best.

How do I make a claim?

If your gadget is lost, stolen and damaged, and you have insurance, here’s what you usually need to do:

  1. Report the loss or theft of your gadget to the police as soon as possible. You can call the non-emergency number or 101 or visit your local police station in person

  1. Contact your mobile phone provider if your phone is lost or stolen. For other lost or stolen devices, you can also contact the gadget manufacturer (if you use their tracking service or need to report the device as stolen). This may help block or trace your device

  1. Tell your insurer as soon as you can. You can normally do this online or by phone

  1. Have your details ready, like your policy number and what happened

  1. Share any proof, such as photos, a police report or crime number (if it was stolen or lost)

  1. Wait for a decision. Your insurer will tell you if your claim is approved and what happens next

  1. Be ready to pay an excess. This is a set amount you’ll need to pay towards the cost of the claim. It will be explained in your policy

Make sure to check your policy documents to see exactly what’s covered, what you need to do and how long you have to make a claim.

Key takeaways

  • There are different ways to protect your gadgets. Gadget insurance, home insurance and travel insurance with a gadget cover add-on can all help, depending on where and how you use your devices

  • Always check what’s included in your policy. Look out for things like claim limits, accidental damage, whether you need to list your gadgets separately and if your policy covers gadgets for business use

  • Having the right cover can save you time, stress and money. If something happens to your phone, laptop, tablet, smartwatch or other device, insurance can help you get back on track without big costs

Common questions about gadget insurance

  • Sometimes. Some policies cover second-hand or refurbished devices if they’re in good condition and you have a receipt. Always check the policy details.

  • Yes. Some insurers let you cover gadgets used by your children, like tablets or phones they use at home or school. The adult who takes out the policy must be responsible for the gadgets.

  • Contents insurance protects things in your home, like furniture and electronics. It may cover gadgets, but usually only at home. Some contents insurance policies, like Post Office Home Insurance, can cover gadgets away from home for an extra cost. Always check your policy to see what’s included.

Gadget insurance is designed just for tech and often protects it outside the home as standard, plus extra cover for things like accidental damage and loss.

  • It depends. Home insurance may not cover your gadgets against accidental damage in the home or if they’re damaged or lost outside the house. This extra level of cover is available, but you might have to pay extra for it. It’s always best to check your policy documents or contact your insurer. Gadget insurance gives more protection for things like accidental damage and loss.

  • Some gadget insurance policies include worldwide cover. Others let you add it. If you travel with your devices, check if they’re protected while you’re away.

  • Post Office Gadget Insurance is a standalone insurance product that offers year-round cover for the devices you rely on. It protects against various risks like accidental damage, loss and theft. It’ll even cover you for up to 45 days abroad per year.

The gadget cover add-on for Post Office Travel Insurance only covers your devices during your trip. It’s ideal if you only want short-term protection while you’re away.

  • Contact your insurer as soon as you can. Most let you claim online or by phone. You may need proof of purchase and a police report if it was stolen.
