What is a Schengen visa?
International students who are residing in an EU country can apply for a visa that allows them to travel freely within the Schengen area.
What happens to Schengen visas for UK-based international students after Brexit?
Schengen visas are an EU initiative, which means that when the UK’s transition period out of the bloc expires on 31 December 2020, international students resident in the UK are unlikely to be able to apply for them.
This has not yet been confirmed by the UK government, however you should not assume that you will be able to get a Schengen visa after this time.
What does this mean for travel insurance?
Schengen visas require applicants to have a certain level of travel insurance with health cover. This will continue to be the case for applicants who are resident in EU/EEA countries. However, students residing in the UK will be unable to apply for a Schengen visa
Remember, though, that it is important to have travel insurance for any overseas trips you make.
