Novel approach brings Post Office services and more to a local library

When Stradbroke lost important local services, the community came together to create a Post Office branch inside its library.

Today, it's a multi-purpose place where people can post a parcel, pay a bill, grab a coffee and catch up with neighbours under one roof in Suffolk.

A Post Office in the heart of a library

Imagine popping into your local library to pick up a novel and leaving having posted a parcel, paid a bill and ticked a few online tasks off your to-do list. Throw in a coffee and a catch-up with familiar faces and you've got a good picture of life at Stradbroke Post Office branch in Suffolk.

How the community brought services back

In 2012, Stradbroke lost both its Post Office branch and village shop. Residents had fewer places to access everyday services and fewer opportunities to meet and catch up.

In response, community volunteers formed the Stradbroke Courthouse & Library Trust (SCALT). They asked local people what they wanted from the vacant courthouse and library building and two priorities quickly emerged: a Post Office branch and a café.

The result was a new branch that opened in 2014 and has been serving the village ever since. What began as a response to the loss of local services has become one of the village's most valued community spaces.

A fresh chapter

The Stradbroke Library building the branch sits inside has served local people for generations. Once a Victorian Corn Hall and later a Magistrates' Court, it's now home to a library, and a range of community activities, as well as the Post Office counter and services.

For postmaster Maureen John, that's exactly as it should be. "It's a brilliant community facility at the heart of our village," she says. People come in to send parcels, pay bills, do their banking or renew vehicle tax. But that's only part of the story.

Many visitors borrow books, attend community events, ask for help with online tasks or simply stop for a chat. The branch has become part of everyday village life.

More than a place to send parcels

Having a Post Office branch nearby makes life easier, especially for older residents and people living in rural areas.

Customers can:

But it's the extra support around those services that makes the branch stand out and contribute to a thriving community, which many would be lost without.

A place to meet and connect

A volunteer-run café opens twice a week alongside the branch. People drop in for a coffee, meet friends and catch up with neighbours to socialise and connect. Some visit the Post Office branch and stay for a chat. Others visit the café and end up using the branch while they're there. It's a simple idea, but it helps people stay connected.

Helping people get online

Not everyone feels confident using digital services. That's why staff and volunteers help local people with everyday tasks such as:

  • Completing online forms
  • Applying for bus passes or Blue Badges
  • Printing documents
  • Finding information online

For some residents, that face-to-face help can make all the difference. It means they can get the answers they need quicker.

Meet Maureen

Ask Maureen what she enjoys most about being a postmaster and she won't talk about transactions; she'll talk about people.

She serves parents sending Vinted parcels while their children browse the shelves. She’s happy when neighbours catch up over coffee. She’s delighted when residents get help with tasks they might otherwise struggle to complete. And she's played a big part in community projects over the years.

One challenge saw her read 72 books to raise £1,500. She's particularly proud of a community artwork project in the café, where local people added their names to panels celebrating the library, café and Post Office branch.

For Maureen, those moments matter every bit as much as the services the branch provides.

Looking ahead

More than a decade after opening, the branch is still going strong. Its value has been recognised beyond the village too. In 2016, the project won a National Library Award at the Edge Festival in the Social Community category, reinforcing the powerful role it plays in Suffolk.

Recent changes to local library arrangements have also reinforced how important the branch has become. Support remains in place to keep Post Office services available from the library, so the community con continue to thrive.

What Stradbroke Post Office really stands for

Stradbroke Post Office is proof of what can happen when a community comes together. When local services were lost, local people stepped in. What followed was more than just a replacement branch.

Today, people come here to send parcels, do their banking, get help, meet friends and spend time together. Under one roof, the library, café and Post Office branch help keep the community connected and provides access to vital services.
