Children under 18 travel free on a family policy1
24/7 access to a GP2 through your phone
5-star Defaqto and Moneyfacts rating for Premier cover3
Family travel insurance covers the whole family on a single policy, so everyone is protected under the same terms with one payment and one document to keep track of. Rather than buying individual policies for each family member, one family policy does the job for everyone travelling together.
With Post Office Family Travel Insurance, children under 18 with no pre-existing medical conditions travel free. You only pay for the adults. The policy covers you and your partner (if applicable) and your dependent children or grandchildren under 18, whether they're biological, adopted, fostered or stepchildren. Single parents can also take out a family policy.
A family policy offers the exact same cover as an individual policy. Some limits, exclusions or excesses may apply, but you can check our full policy wording online for the details of what’s covered.
If anyone in your family is taken ill or injured abroad, we cover the cost of treatment and, if necessary, getting them home safely
If you need to cancel or cut short your trip due to an insured event such as illness, bereavement or redundancy, you can make a claim on your pre-paid costs
We provide cover for lost, stolen or damaged luggage and personal possessions. This is worth thinking about carefully with children, as families tend to travel with a lot
Cover if a member of your family accidentally causes injury or damage to someone else or their property while on holiday
Higher levels of cover include additional benefits such as missed departure, delay and abandonment cover and a lower excess.
Every Post Office travel insurance policy, including family policies, includes Medical Assistance Plus2 at no extra cost. This gives every person on your policy access to a UK-registered GP by phone or video, any time of day or night, wherever you are in the world.
Each person on the policy gets up to three GP appointments per trip. For families travelling with young children, this can be particularly reassuring. If a child is unwell in the night, you can speak to a GP straight away rather than navigating an unfamiliar local health system.
Medical Assistance Plus is available on all three levels of cover: Economy, Standard and Premier. There is no excess to pay for any appointment.
Post Office Family Travel Insurance is available at three levels. Here's a summary of what's included at each level. All amounts are per person for everyone included on the policy. For the full table of benefits and excesses, see the policy wording. Excess amounts shown are per person, per claim.

You can tailor your family travel insurance policy with optional add-ons to suit your holiday plans. There will be an additional premium for each add-on you select.
This optional extra helps protect you from the impact of airspace disruption, natural catastrophes, terrorist acts or Covid-19
If you’re happy with the cover offered, but worried about excess fees, you can opt for an excess waiver. For an additional premium, you can add it to any Post Office level of cover for zero excess fees
Insure all your devices with our easy-to-add gadget cover. It’s perfect to protect all your smartphones, tablets, laptops and consoles
Specialist cover is mandatory for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding as there’s a greater risk of emergency costs. Make sure you’re protected on the pistes
If you're going on a cruise, specialist cover is both important and mandatory. It covers missed departure due to breakdown, falling ill on board, being confined to your cabin, lost baggage and more
Trip extensions are available up to 45 or 60 days, increasing from the standard 31 days
If your family takes more than one holiday a year, an annual multi-trip policy could save you time and money. Rather than buying a new policy for each trip, annual cover keeps your family insured for an unlimited number of holidays, 31 days each or fewer, within a 12-month period. Even two trips a year can be cheaper with annual multi-trip insurance.
You can get annual multi-trip cover for Europe, Worldwide or just the UK. Everyone on your policy is covered for any trips they take within that area throughout the year, provided the trip doesn’t go against UK Government travel advice. This means if your kids go on holiday with a friend’s family or you go away without them, you’re all still covered.
A health condition shouldn’t stop you having a family holiday. Post Office Travel Insurance considers all pre-existing medical conditions for children and adults, you just need to declare them when you take out a policy, or any claim you make may be invalid.
If we’re not able to offer you a policy due to the health condition of anyone on your trip, we’ll refer you to a specialist provider.
If you need to make a claim you can do so online or over the phone. In the last five years we've paid out over £79 million in travel insurance claims and we aim to make the process as easy as possible. Here’s how the online claims process works:
Submit a claim online any time 24/7. Enter your details, select who was involved, and tell us what happened and when
No need to send or wait for documents in the post. Just upload them or take a photo on your device and upload that
Don’t have everything you need? You can save where you’re up to and come back to complete your claim later
We’ll check your claim and share our decision.
A family policy covers one or two adults living at the same address, plus their dependent, adopted, fostered or step-children or grandchildren who are under 18. Single parents can also take out a family policy. Our policies cover a maximum of six people, so for families that’s two adults and four children or one adult and five children.
While children without pre-existing medical conditions go free with Post Office Travel Insurance family policies, you do still need to include them when you take out a policy. It’s vital that they’re included on the policy so that your policy accurately reflects your trip.
Yes. Post Office offers single parent family policies, which cover one adult and their dependent children under 18. The same benefits apply, and children are insured for free provided they have no pre-existing medical conditions.
If your family takes more than one holiday a year, an annual multi-trip policy might work out cheaper and more convenient than buying separate single-trip policies each time. If you're only planning one trip, a single-trip policy is probably the better option.
Post Office travel insurance considers all pre-existing conditions. You'll need to declare them when you get a quote, and we'll tell you whether they can be covered and at what cost. It's important to declare all conditions for every member of the family, including children.
It can still be worth having cover for a UK break. While everyone in your family can access NHS treatment anywhere in the UK, travel insurance also provides cover for non-health related issues. These include cancellation costs if you have to cancel your trip before you go, baggage loss or damage, and personal liability, all up to the limits set out in your policy. To claim on a UK trip, you need to have booked at least one night of accommodation at least 100 miles from home (or over a sea crossing).
1We cannot offer automatic free policies to children with pre-existing health conditions. We cover many health conditions, so please go through the quote journey to check if your child’s health condition impacts the price of your quote.
2Medical Assistance Plus is not available for trips taken in the UK, only for international travel. The service allows up to 3 separate medical events per person listed on the policy, and up to 3 appointments per event. All appointment charges are covered by your travel insurance policy. You will not need to pay any excess fees for this service. You may need to pay for your prescription upfront and claim on your return home.
3Post Office Premier travel insurance policies are rated 5 stars by Defaqto for 2026 and 5 stars by Moneyfacts for 2025. Defaqto and Moneyfacts ratings apply to Premier policies only.
