USA travel insurance - Post Office

Get ready for the USA

The USA is a huge and varied country, home to iconic cities, dramatic landscapes and some of the world's most famous landmarks. Whether you're planning a road trip along Route 66, a family visit to Disney World or a city break in New York, there's a huge amount to see and do.

Planning your trip is part of the fun, and sorting travel insurance which fits your plans can help you visualise your upcoming adventure. In this guide, we'll look at whether you need cover, why it tends to cost more for the USA, what a policy typically includes, and some practical things worth knowing before you fly.

Do I need travel insurance for the USA?

Travel insurance isn't a legal requirement for visiting the USA, but the FCDO advises that all travellers take out appropriate travel insurance before visiting, and for good reason.

Healthcare in America is among the most expensive in the world, and it's largely provided privately rather than through a state system. Without cover, even a routine visit to the emergency room or a short hospital stay could leave you facing a large bill, and a more serious medical event could cost a great deal more.

There's no reciprocal healthcare agreement between the UK and the USA, so unlike some European destinations, there's no equivalent to the EHIC/GHIC to fall back on.

What travel insurance do I need for the USA?

With Post Office Travel Insurance, Worldwide cover includes the USA, Canada and the Caribbean, as well as destinations further afield such as Australia, Asia and South Africa. Many insurers group countries in a similar way, as opposed to providing specific USA insurance.

Beyond that, the level of cover you choose comes down to personal preference and what matters most for your trip. Some travellers prioritise a lower excess, others want higher limits on emergency medical expenses, and some simply want the most affordable option that covers the basics.

At Post Office, you can choose from Economy, Standard or Premier cover on our travel insurance page. Here's how the main levels of cover compare:

What travel insurance does and doesn't cover

Post Office Travel Insurance can help if something unexpected happens while you're in the USA. Depending on your policy, you can be covered for:

  • Emergency medical expenses: If you become ill or are injured while away, your policy can help with treatment costs and getting you home if you need emergency care, up to the limits in your policy. You also get access to 24/7 access to a doctor1  through your phone, included on all policies
  • Cancelling or cutting your trip short: If you have to cancel or come home early for a reason listed in your policy, you can claim back unused travel and accommodation costs up to the policy limits
  • Lost, stolen or damaged belongings: This includes items such as luggage, travel documents or cash. Limits apply, and you'll need to report any theft incident to the police within 48 hours to make a claim
  • Missed or delayed flights: If your international transport is delayed or you miss it for a reason covered by your policy, you may be able to claim back certain additional costs. Check your policy for what's included and any limits
  • Personal accident and legal expenses: Your policy can also provide cover for personal accident claims and help with legal costs, up to the policy limits

What's not covered

There are some situations a standard travel insurance policy won't cover. These include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions that haven't been declared and screened as part of your policy
  • Certain high-risk adventure sports and activities, a list of which can be found in our policy documentation
  • Travelling against FCDO advice or breaking local laws or customs
  • Incidents that occur under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Missed flights due to personal error, such as oversleeping

You can find our full policy wording on our make a claim page, which sets out exactly what's covered and what isn't, along with any limits involved.

Optional extras

Depending on what you're planning to do in the USA, you may want to add extra cover to your policy. Limits and terms apply to the following add-ons, all of which can be found in our policy documentation:

  • Gadget cover: To protect phones, tablets, laptops and other devices
  • Excess waiver: So you don't have to pay the first part of a claim
  • Trip disruption cover: Protecting you against events including natural catastrophes, terrorism and airspace disruption
  • Extended trip cover: If you'd like longer trips on an annual policy
  • Winter sports cover: If you plan to ski or snowboard, this is a mandatory add-on
  • Cruise cover: A mandatory requirement for most cruise operators, covering specific cruise-related occurrences

Plan your trip with the peace of mind it’s covered

Why is travel insurance to the USA more expensive?

If you've compared prices before, you may have noticed that cover for the USA tends to cost more than for many other destinations. The main reason is the cost of healthcare. Because medical treatment in the USA can be so expensive, insurers need to price policies to reflect the potential cost of a claim, particularly for emergency treatment, hospital stays and medical repatriation

Can you get travel insurance for the USA with a medical condition?

Having a pre-existing medical condition doesn't automatically rule you out of getting travel insurance for the USA. At Post Office, we consider all pre-existing medical conditions as part of our screening process, so it's worth getting a quote even if you've been declined by another provider.

You'll need to declare any conditions you have, along with any prescribed medication, when you take out your policy. This is especially important for a trip to the USA, given how expensive medical treatment can be if something goes wrong and isn't covered.

We're not able to offer cover for every condition. If we can't help, we'll refer you to a specialist provider that may be able to help instead. You can find out more in our guide to pre-existing medical conditions.

Getting around

  • Flights: For long journeys, flying is the most common way to get around the USA. Direct flights from the UK serve major hubs including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami
  • Trains: Amtrak connects many major cities and can be a scenic way to see the country, though it's often slower and pricier than flying
  • Driving: Since the USA is so spread out, driving is often one of the best ways to explore. Remember that driving laws, and speed limits, vary by state and are usually lower than in the UK. In some places a valid UK driving licence is enough to hire a car, though others require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which is worth arranging in advance
  • Within cities: Public transport varies widely. Cities like New York and Chicago have strong networks, while others, such as Los Angeles, are more geared towards cars. Ridesharing apps are widely available

Your travel insurance might not cover car hire itself, so you may need a separate policy for this. It's usually included in the rental agreement, but it's always worth checking.

Visas and ESTA

Most UK travellers need an ESTA to visit the USA for stays of up to 90 days. Apply online well before you travel, ideally at least 72 hours in advance, as delays can happen.

If your ESTA is denied, or you don't meet the criteria to apply for one, you'll need to apply for a US visa instead, which usually takes longer.

Places to go and things to do in the USA

The USA is bursting with amazing places to explore. Here are just 10 of its must-visit destinations, though there are plenty more besides.

1. Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the world. Its vast, layered red rock landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see, carved over millions of years by the Colorado River.

Whether you hike the South Rim trails, take a helicopter tour or raft along the river, the views are spectacular. The Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that lets you walk out over the edge, offers a unique if nerve jangling perspective.

Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical times to visit, as the changing light brings out the canyon's stunning colours.

2. New York City, New York

With its fast pace, diverse food scene and endless attractions, New York promises an unforgettable trip. You can admire the skyscrapers of Manhattan, wander through Central Park, and take a ferry to see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island or Staten Island.

Times Square is always buzzing, while the city's world-class museums include The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. You can catch a show on Broadway or explore Brooklyn for its cafes and skyline views.

3. Disney World, Florida

Disney World in Orlando offers endless family fun across several theme and water parks. You can enjoy thrilling rides, watch parades and meet your favourite characters.

There's the Magic Kingdom, with Cinderella's Castle at its centre, Epcot for exploring different cultures and cuisines, Animal Kingdom for safari-style experiences, and Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge for fans of the films. You'll want a few days here to enjoy it all.

4. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone, America's first national park, remains one of its most enchanting. Spread across Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, it's famous for geothermal features like Old Faithful, a geyser that erupts on a regular schedule, and the vivid colours of the Grand Prismatic Spring.

The park is also a haven for wildlife, with bears, bison, elk and wolves all found in their natural habitats, and offers superb hiking through forests and meadows.

5. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is a dazzling desert oasis of entertainment, famous for its nightlife, casinos and over the top attractions.

Stroll along the Strip to see hotels like The Bellagio, with its fountain show, and The Venetian, complete with gondola rides. Beyond the casinos, Vegas offers everything from Cirque du Soleil to concerts by global stars, and it's an easy base for day trips to Red Rock Canyon or the Grand Canyon.

6. San Francisco, California

San Francisco is a city of charm and character, set against the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay.

The Golden Gate Bridge is perfect for a scenic walk or bike ride across to Sausalito. You can also explore Alcatraz Island, wander Fisherman's Wharf, or ride one of the historic cable cars up the city's famous hills. Each neighbourhood, from bohemian Haight-Ashbury to the vibrant Mission District, has its own distinct feel.

7. Hawaii

Hawaii is a tropical paradise with something for everyone. Relax on Waikiki Beach, hike through the green valleys of Kauai, or snorkel in the clear waters of Maui.

On the Big Island, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers active volcanoes and lava tubes to explore, while you can also learn to hula or attend a traditional luau. With sunshine all year round, it's ideal for relaxing and adventure alike.

8. Route 66

Route 66 is a famous road trip running almost 2,500 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, passing through eight states and taking in small towns, roadside attractions and old diners.

Highlights along the way include Cadillac Ranch in Texas, where colourful cars are planted nose down in the ground, and the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. It's a brilliant way to explore the heart of America at your own pace.

9. Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is a wine-lover's paradise, just an hour's drive from San Francisco, famous for its rolling vineyards and world-class wineries.

Take a wine tour to sample everything from bold reds to crisp whites, or hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train for scenic views while you dine.

10. Chicago, Illinois

Known as the Windy City, Chicago has striking architecture and a lively arts and food scene. Take a boat tour along the Chicago River to admire the skyscrapers, enjoy deep-dish pizza, and explore neighbourhoods each with their own character.

Spend time at Millennium Park, home to the Cloud Gate sculpture nicknamed The Bean, and visit cultural institutions such as the Field Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Common questions about USA travel

  • There is no set answer to this as it’s impossible to know what medical care you may require. Just remember that even routine medical treatment can add up quickly, and more serious care, or being flown home if you need it, can be very expensive.

Medical expense limits vary across our Economy, Standard and Premier policies, so you can choose a limit you feel comfortable with.

  • Beyond medical cover, it's worth thinking about the other areas a policy protects. For example, you may want to check if your limit for cancellation is enough to cover the cost of your holiday, and that cover for lost, damaged or stolen belongings reflects the value of what you're taking with you.

You will also need specialist cover for certain activities or trip types, such as winter sports cover or cruise cover.

  • If you lose your passport or it's stolen, report it straight away via GOV.UK and to the local police, then apply for a replacement. Report the incident in detail and include the police report when you make a claim.
