How far will my Russian rubles go?

Despite spanning nine time zones and two continents, Russia remains an elusive and enigmatic place for many UK travellers. But low-fare airlines offering routes to St Petersburg and Moscow have opened the country up.

On a modest budget, you can cut costs by staying at self-catered hostels and cooking your own meals. Supermarket food’s cheaper than the UK, and living costs are generally much lower in rural areas.

In the cities, you can stay in a comfortable hotel and dine out for lunch and dinner on a mid-range budget. But Moscow can be one of the world’s most expensive cities if you stay and eat in upmarket hotels and restaurants.

  • Use the Moscow Metro – it’s faster and cheaper than taking a taxi
  • Agree on fares up-front – if you do go by cab, get your destination written down in Russian to avoid any confusion and agree on a price before setting off
  • Know the day’s exchange rate – some hotels and upmarket places will quote prices in US dollars but charge you in rubles at an unfavourable exchange rate
