Chilean pesos: how far will your money go?
Chile is an enormous country with varying levels of infrastructure throughout. ATMs are usually quite easy to find, and it will be important to have cash as plastic is mainly used in established businesses like hotels, car rental firms and higher-end restaurants.
Prices can vary quite broadly across the country but its capital city, Santiago, was among the most expensive of all destinations surveyed in the Post Office Money long-haul report.
Beware that charges when withdrawing cash or using plastic can be high relative to other countries. High-value bills can be tricky to break so it’s useful to have smaller notes and change on you. You’re likely to get the best exchange rates in the capital of Santiago. Hotels and some other businesses often accept US dollars as currency.
Bureaux de change can be found in most populous areas but it may be worth checking online for the current exchange rate to be sure that you’re not paying over the odds unnecessarily.
