Pre-existing medical conditions

You don't need to be in perfect health to get travel insurance. In fact, Post Office Travel Insurance covers most pre-existing medical conditions. If we can't offer you a policy, we'll refer you to a specialist provider which may be able to help.

Be sure to declare any conditions you have when you get a quote, even things that are manageable and don't impact you day-to-day, such as high blood pressure or asthma. If you fail to declare a medical condition when you take out your policy, a claim you make may be rejected, which means you will have paid for cover you then don't benefit from.

24/7 access to a doctor with Medical Assistance Plus

If you'd rather not navigate a hospital visit in a foreign language for a non-emergency concern, you don't have to. Medical Assistance Plus1 , powered by Air Doctor, enables you to speak to an English-speaking doctor, either through via video call, at your hotel or at a nearby clinic.

The doctor you speak to can even have prescriptions delivered to your nearest pharmacy. It gives you the extra peace of mind that should you need to speak to someone about your health, you don’t need to know the ins and outs of that particular country's medical system.

Tailor your policy to your trip and your preferences

Post Office Travel Insurance enables you to build your policy around what works for you and your trip. Here you'll find required add-ons for certain types of trip, like cruise cover and winter sports cover, as well as other optional add-ons. These extra features come at an additional cost, which is added to your premium.

  • Trip disruption cover

This optional extra helps protect you from the impact of airspace disruption, natural catastrophes, terrorist acts or Covid-19

  • Excess waiver

If you’re happy with the cover offered, but worried about excess fees, you can opt for an excess waiver. For an additional premium, you can add it to any Post Office level of cover for zero excess fees

  • Gadget cover

Insure all your devices with our easy-to-add gadget cover. It’s perfect to protect all your smartphones, tablets, laptops and consoles

  • Winter sports cover

Specialist cover is mandatory for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding as there’s a greater risk of emergency costs. Make sure you’re protected on the pistes

  • Cruise cover

If you're going on a cruise, specialist cover is both important and mandatory. It covers missed departure due to breakdown, falling ill on board, being confined to your cabin, lost baggage and more

  • Trip extensions

Trip extensions are available up to 45 or 60 days, increasing from the standard 31 days

Travel insurance for over 60s

If you're in your 60s and looking to make the most of your travels, we can explain how annual and single-trip cover compare and what to expect if you're managing a health condition.

Travel insurance for over 70s

If you’re over 70, you get the same level of cover as anybody else, but our annual multi-trip cover stops at 75. Read more about what you need to know on our designated page.

Common questions

  • There's no upper age limit for single-trip cover with Post Office. As you get older, the amount of time a single trip insurance policy can cover does reduce, and annual multi-trip cover is only available up to age 75. Our pages on travel insurance for over 60s and travel insurance for over 70s go into more detail on this.

  • Yes. We consider all pre-existing conditions, though you'll need to complete medical screening so we can understand your health and offer cover that fits. If we can't cover a particular condition, we'll point you towards a specialist provider.

  • It depends on how often you travel. Annual multi-trip cover can work out cheaper if you take more than one trip a year, but it's only available up to age 75. Single-trip cover has no upper age limit, making it the main option for older travellers taking one longer trip.
