How to get change at Post Office branches
If you own or run a small or medium business, there’s a good chance you’ll need to keep cash handy each day. You might need coins and notes ready so you can give customers the right change when they pay. Or maybe you need petty cash available for small things your company might need to buy during the day.
If your bank offers access to its business banking services at Post Office, you might be able to sign up for a change-giving service at our counters.
That includes:
- Notes
- Coin bags
- Mixed denominations
Thousands of Post Office branches and a growing number of Banking Hubs across the UK provide banking services for their communities. Your nearest may be closer and more convenient than visiting a bank branch.
To check what services are available for your bank, just select it from the list on our banking services page. Contact your bank directly if you need more details.
Can I get change at my local branch?
Most major UK banks offer access to banking wherever it’s available in Post Office branches. For many banks, this includes business banking and change giving specifically.
If banking isn’t available at your nearest Post Office branch, it’s usually because of high-demand services like our Drop & Go fast-drop mails service.
You may be able to find a nearby alternative using our branch finder.
The Folly Tearoom
Lee’s tearoom, The Folly, in Norfolk has become a popular hangout for regular customers.
With frequent cash payments, he relies on nearby banking services and his local Post Office branch to manage change and daily operations. Here’s his story.
What you’ll need, fees and charges
What do I need to bring?
What you need to get change from your business account at a Post Office or Banking Hub can vary by branch. You’ll need:
- Your business debit card or
- A personalised paying in slip or
- Your cheque book
Tell our branch team which denominations you’d like. They’ll accommodate you as best they can, based on the cash they have available. You’ll get a receipt for the transaction.
Can I get coins as well as notes?
In most cases, yes. You can usually ask for:
- £1 and £2 coins
- 50p, 20p and 10p coins
- Notes in common denominations
If you need specific coin bags, it may help to visit earlier in the day or check ahead.
If you regularly need certain denominations, try to plan ahead so you don’t run short during busy periods.
Are there fees for withdrawing business change?
Post Office doesn’t charge you for change giving. But your bank may apply:
- A setup or rolling fee for change-giving
- Cash handling fees
- Limits on change orders
Check your business banking account terms so you know whether fees or limits apply. Check with your bank if you’re unsure.
How does change giving work at Banking Hubs?
It works same way as in Post Office branches. Depending on your bank, you’ll need to provide your debit card, cheque book or a personalised paying in slip.
Banking Hubs are shared banking spaces operated by Post Office with the major banks. They may be your nearest and most convenient option if local bank branches have closed.
