Seven counties make up the United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain. Often called simply ‘the Emirates’, it’s a sovereign state that’s filled with contrasts.
On one hand you have skyscraper hotels and world-famous restaurants. On the other, this Islamic state has an enduring Bedouin tradition.
All of this means your day can start with designer shopping in a Western-style mall and end with a visit to the open-air markets and local cafés.
Plus, no visit to the United Arab Emirates is complete without a trip to the vast desert sands – whether it’s on a camel, a quad bike or in a 4x4.
The UAE dirham is the official currency of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The name ‘dirham’ is derived from the Greek currency, the drachma. One dirham is subdivided into 100 files.
The UAE currency is issued by the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates – but you can get yours for your trip from the Post Office.
Seven counties make up the UAE and use the dirham. They are Abu Dhabi (which serves as the capital), Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain.
