FAQs

Is there an upper limit for monthly downloads?

No. All Post Office Unlimited Broadband deals let you download as much as you want, every month. We don’t apply any extra charges or data caps. Nor will we cut the speed of your broadband at peak times like some broadband providers. We’re an open book when it comes to our traffic management policies. You’ll find full details in the Fair & Acceptable usage policy section of our T&Cs.

Can I get an actual download speed estimate for my address?

You’ll get a broadband speed estimate when you place your order. This will tell you the possible speed of your line in best conditions. When one device is connected to your Wi-Fi router with an Ethernet cable, your broadband speed should be near it. If you want to check how fast your broadband will be online, use our speed checker. Ask in-branch – we give no-obligation speed estimates. Or call our Home Phone and Unlimited Broadband team on 0800 066 0514.

How is my broadband speed worked out?

The fibre broadband speed estimate we give you will be based on the factors below:
1. Your address, and how close you are to the telephone exchange.
2. Similar lines in your area – their speed has an effect on your broadband speed
3. The condition of the wiring in your home – older wiring could result in a slower connection
4. The number of people using your network simultaneously
5. Interference from electrical devices and radio signals

What if I don’t have a working phone line?

You can still join and get Unlimited Broadband. We’ll just need to arrange a convenient time for an engineer to install a new line at your address. We can do this when you place your order. There’s an extra, one-off charge for this service. We’ll go through everything with you so you’re aware of all the costs before you confirm your order.

Will my phone number change?

If you tell us you want to keep your current number, we’ll tell you if we can switch it over to Post Office when you place your order. Sometimes, network issues mean that’s not possible. But we’ll let you know if that’s so, and ask if you’d like a new number. If that’s acceptable and you’re happy to confirm your order, we’ll give you an estimated switchover date. It’s generally the go-live date stated in the welcome pack we send after you’ve confirmed your order. Our Home Phone and Unlimited Fibre Broadband Plus support team will be in touch in the event of any delay.

When will my Unlimited Broadband be installed?

Your go-live date depends on whether or not you have a working phone line at your home address. If you do, it could be as little as 10 working days from the date you confirm your Unlimited Fibre Broadband Plus order. When you confirm, we’ll send your welcome pack and expected go-live date – usually within 5 working days of confirmation.

If you don’t have an active phone line at your address, we’ll need to arrange for an engineer to install a new line. That means it may take longer than 10 days for your service to go live. Broadband installation may also take longer if you’re currently with a cable-based provider – Virgin Media for example. In all cases, give you an estimated switchover date when you place your order.

Do I have to cancel my current broadband contract?

It depends on the supplier. If it’s BT, Plusnet or TalkTalk, we can take care of every aspect of the switchover on your behalf, including contract cancellation. If you’re a Virgin Media customer, you’ll need to wait until your Post Office Unlimited Fibre Broadband Plus service goes live before cancelling.

Where can I find your call rates?

Home Phone call rates are competitively priced. You’ll find a full list of call rates in our Price Guide.

How do I bar outgoing calls?

If you don’t want to make calls from your landline phone, our Home Phone customer care team can set up call barring for you. Call them on 0345 600 3210. You’ll still be able to receive incoming calls and make outgoing calls to emergency services numbers like 999 and 112.

What If I change my mind?

You may cancel your order any time up to 14 calendar days from the day after you place your order. If your service has already gone live, you may cancel your service at any time but may be subject to Early Termination Charges if your service has a minimum contract term. Details on these charges and your rights to cancel can be found in our Broadband & Phone - Terms and conditions and Price Guide.

Broadband Speeds

Broadband speeds – things you need to know

Average speeds are based on the download speeds of at least 50% of our customer base at peak time (8pm-10pm) as at 04.08.2018. Speeds will vary depending on a number of different factors. Your exact speed estimate will be given at point of sale. We’ll estimate your download speed range when you check availability at your address. Speeds may be lower than the advertised average peak time speeds or any speed estimate we provide due to factors outside our control such as the distance your home is from the telephone exchange, the specification of your computer, the condition of the wiring in your home or other factors such electrical interference. You may also notice a drop in your speeds during peak times in the evening and at weekends when more people are using the internet. For more information see www.postoffice.co.uk/broadband-speed
