Van Insurance optional extras
You can add RAC Breakdown cover, Motor Legal Protection, Van Tools and Contents cover and Keycare to your policy (an additional cost applies).
- Add RAC Breakdown cover to your policy and get assistance on the roadside or at home also includes a recovery service if your vehicle can't be repaired by the road, onward travel assistance and a 24/7 helpline.
Breakdown cover is provided by RAC Motoring Services.
- Motor Legal Protection to help recover legal expenses for uninsured losses, including personal injury up to £100,000, as a result of a van accident that was not your fault . You may also be able to claim for your policy excess and repair costs if the third party has valid motor insurance.
Motor Legal Protection is underwritten by RAC Insurance Ltd.
- Our Tools and Van Contents cover is designed for both business and personal van users and comes with a range of benefits to suit your needs. Choose the level of cover you need ranging from £1,000 to £7,500. Covers contents in, on or being unloaded from your van.
Tools and Van Contents cover is administered by AXA Insurance.
- Take out Keycare cover and get a 24-hour emergency helpline and up to £1,000 cover per year for the replacement of lost or stolen keys or reprogramming of immobilisers, and £40 a day for up to three days for vehicle hire.
Keycare cover is administered by Keycare and underwritten by Ageas.
- We’ll cover most goods vehicles that are designed to carry goods, tools or supplies up to the gross weight of 3.5 tonnes (3500kg). We can’t offer cover for vans that carry passengers such as buses or mini buses, or vehicles used as plant or machinery.

Answers to some of your most common questions
Is my van insured?
If you are not sure you can check on the MID data base it is free to check your own vehicle registration number, however please be aware that it can take up to 7 days for a vehicle to appear on this database after you have taken out insurance.
If I've been named on another policy, am I entitled to any No Claims Discount (NCD)?
Post Office, will only reward the actual policy holder with no claims discount. If you have been claim free however, we may be able to give some type of introductory discount. To find out more please contact our team on 0345 073 1002.
Does it cost more to pay for my insurance monthly?
If you choose to pay by monthly instalments, you will be charged for the credit and this is indicated by the APR %. This means you pay more than you would for an annual lump sum payment arrangement.
How do I renew my policy?
You will receive a renewal notice 28 days before your renewal date, which will give you instructions about any actions you may need to take.
What does Auto Renewal mean and how do I change this?
It means that your policy will renew automatically when your policy comes up for renewal next year. It is a convenient stress-free way of staying insured. We’ll send a reminder 28 days before your Renewal date so you can check the details and make sure you are still happy to go ahead.
If you change your mind and want to opt out of an automatic renewal it is easy to do . Either go onto Your Account or call the Contact Centre to make the change.
Can I drive a van on my car insurance?
As the insurance for your car is based on its registration number then unless the certificate of insurance permits you to drive a van on it as well then unfortunately no you cannot drive your van on your car insurance. Our Driving Other Cars (DOC) cover does not extend to Van.
How can I cancel my van insurance?
Please call us on 0345 073 1002. Charges and fees may be applicable when cancelling your policy before or after the 14 day cooling off period. Please see policy document for full details.
I would like to use my insured van within the European Economic Area to aid the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. Do I need to contact my insurer and make changes to my policy?
No, until 11th June 2022 our commercial van customers with UK comprehensive insurance will also have comprehensive cover for any cross-border journeys taken to provide humanitarian aid within the Green Card Free Circulation Area (GCFCA) countries. Therefore, you do not need to contact us unless you require additional cover or plan to leave GCFCA countries.
The Green Card Free Circulation Area (GCFCA) comprises of all 30 European Economic Area (EEA) countries as well as UK, Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Switzerland
Am I allowed to drive in Ukraine when providing aid for the humanitarian crisis?
No, cover does not include driving in the Ukraine. You should also be aware that damage or injury caused by war, conflicts or similar events is common exclusion in motor insurance policies.
