Why visit the United Arab Emirates?

Seven counties make up the United Arab Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al Khaima, Sharjah and Umm al Qaiwain. Often called simply ‘the Emirates’, it’s a sovereign state that’s filled with contrasts.

On one hand you have skyscraper hotels and world-famous restaurants. On the other, this Islamic state has an enduring Bedouin tradition.

All of this means your day can start with designer shopping in a Western-style mall and end with a visit to the open-air markets and local cafés.

Plus, no visit to the United Arab Emirates is complete without a trip to the vast desert sands – whether it’s on a camel, a quad bike or in a 4x4.

  • Avoid the hotel cars  they cost much more than local taxis and also have to pay road tolls
  • Hit the beach  for such an expensive city, one of Dubai's top attractions is completely free
  • Shop at markets not malls  western-style shopping centres bump up their prices and don’t have as good an atmosphere
