Find trusted online pet pharmacies

Online pet pharmacies offer a variety of prescription and non-prescription medications for your furry friends. Here’s a list of accredited retailers by Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

When should I use an online pet pharmacy?

Buying pet medication online can be cheaper and more convenient, but you will need to wait for it to be delivered. This might not always be the right choice for your pet.

Always follow your vet’s advice. They understand your pet’s needs and can guide you on the best option.

If your pet needs urgent treatment

You should always buy medication directly from your vet if your pet needs urgent relief from an illness, injury or condition.

If your pet doesn’t need urgent treatment

For non-urgent needs, ordering from an online pet pharmacy can usually save you money. It’s also often a cheaper way to top up prescriptions when your pet’s condition is more stable.

Common online pet pharmacy questions

  • To request a repeat prescription, book an appointment with your vet and discuss your pet’s condition with them. At the end of the appointment, you can ask your vet for a written prescription.

Some vets might charge a fee for a written prescription. This fee will be covered as part of your claim.

  • Yes, it’s usually cheaper to order your pet’s medication online, compared to buying directly from your vet. It’s always a good idea to shop around, though, as some online pharmacies offer better prices than others.

  • Make sure the pharmacy has a VMD Accredited Retailer (AIRs) badge on their website. This means they’re accredited by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate.

You can also check if the pharmacy is a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons

  • Yes. When you order from a reputable and trusted online pet pharmacy, a pharmacist will verify your order and prescription. You can’t accidentally order the wrong drug or dosage.

  • No, it’s not possible for an online pharmacist to write a prescription for your pet. By law, your cat, dog or rabbit needs to be examined by a vet in person. They can then provide you with a written prescription.

  • Online pharmacies may reject prescriptions for various reasons. This could include:

    • Out-of-date prescriptions. Make sure your prescription is up to date . if it’s expired, you might need to get a new one from your vet
    • Early re-ordering. Some pharmacies might reject orders if you’re requesting another dose of treatment too soon. Follow the recommended dosage guidelines. And speak to your vet if you’re unsure
    • Unregistered RCVS reference. If the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) reference provided by your vet isn't registered or valid, the pharmacy might refuse the prescription
    • Prescription form errors. You’ll need to speak to your vet if there’s incorrect or missing information on the prescription form
