Post Office Budget Card Plus

Take control of your household budget by putting a little money aside regularly to cover your household bills and spread the cost of Christmas and other gifting occasions.

Key benefits

  • Save what you can: put between a minimum £2 and maximum £250 in multiples of £1 up to the annual limit on your Budget Card Plus.
  • Save up to a maximum of £3,000 every year: and, from 24 hours after putting money on the card, you can use it to pay for selected Post Office services like your car tax, telephone bill or One4all Gift Cards.
  • Shop and buy gifts with your Budget Card Plus at over 22,000 high street stores nationwide and selected online stores between 1st November until 31st January. View the full listing.

Helping you to budget better

With the Budget Card Plus you can’t go overdrawn, you won’t incur any fees or Budget Card Plus charges when you use it and because you’ve put your money aside, you won’t be tempted to spend it. You can check the balance of your card whenever you want, just call 0330 828 0881 to hear your balance over the phone or view it online.

Apply for the card

Complete the short application form and hand it over at the Post Office counter, with the two forms of identification you have  selected (see list on application form) and a minimum of £2. (If you received a Post Office Payout letter from an old account, this can be used as one form of ID).

Put money aside

We’ll give you your Budget Card Plus straight away, so you can use it to start saving.

Use your card

When you're ready to pay for a bill or a service, bring your card into your local branch. We'll swipe it, take the money off it and ask you to sign the receipt as an extra security measure. From the 1st November until 31st January you can shop or buy gifts with your Budget Card Plus card at over 22,000 high street stores nationwide and at selected online stores including Amazon. Simply put money aside all through the year and you can spend at this great range of brands. Ensure you know your account balance before going shopping.

Important information

You must be 18 years or older to apply for a Budget Card Plus. The Budget Card Plus is not a credit card or a charge card, nor is it a debit card linked to a current account. It is a pre-paid card which means that money must be loaded onto the card and used via participating retailers. Interest will not be payable in respect of card balances. We will not issue Card statements. You can obtain your card balance and obtain information about previous card purchases online or calling 0330 828 0881.

The card is safe

If you lose your card or it's stolen just let us know and we'll stop the card. A £5 replacement fee applies for replacement of your card at your request. Please see terms and conditions for full details. We recommend you keep your card and the details of it safe, including the card number.


0800: All calls to 0800 numbers are free of charge whether made from a landline or mobile phone. Calls may be monitored or recorded for training and compliance purposes.

0330: Calls to 03 numbers will cost no more than calling a standard geographic number starting with 01 or 02 from your fixed line or mobile and may be included in your call package dependent on your service provider. Calls may be monitored or recorded for training and compliance purposes.

Post Office Services: You can use the Budget Card Plus for: car tax and other vehicle tax, gas, electricity and telephone bills, council tax and council rent payments, catalogue payments, TV rental, Post Office Home phone & Broadband and One4all Gift Cards. You won't be able to use it for Travel money, Travellers Cheques, Postal Orders or Moneygram®.

Small print

The Budget Card Plus is an Electronic Money product and it is not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. GVS Prepaid Limited however keeps all money exchanged for the Budget Card Plus in a bank account which is separate and segregated from the assets of GVS Prepaid Limited. In the unlikely event of GVS Prepaid Limited becoming insolvent your money is protected and will be available for return to card holders. GVS Prepaid Limited is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011 (registered reference 900230) for the issuing of electronic money.
