Cheap travel insurance

Travelling abroad? Will cheap travel insurance fully protect you and your loved ones when you’re away?

  • some travel insurance policies are cheaper simply because they don’t have everything you need
  • it’s a good idea to get travel insurance for your holiday, even if you’re not leaving the UK
  • make sure your travel insurance covers what you need

Booked your holiday?

Now you need travel insurance so that you can enjoy your holiday with the peace of mind that you and your loved ones are properly protected.

We all want cheap travel insurance, but some policies are cheaper because they don’t cover you for everything you might want.

Here’s our top five things to check you’re covered for when buying your travel insurance:

  1. Cancellation cover: Get the cost of your trip paid back in full if your holiday is cancelled – especially important if it’s a big family holiday which can be costly. Some cheap travel insurance policies offer low compensation for cancellation to keep their prices down.
  2. Your airline goes out of business while you’re away: The technical phrase used by travel insurance policies is Scheduled Airline Failure (SAF). Cheaper travel insurance companies may leave this out of policies because it costs them a lot if it happens.
  3. Phones, MP3 players and laptops: If you’re taking these with you make sure you’re covered for the cost to replace them all. This could cost a lot – which is why cheap travel insurance policies often don’t include them*.
  4. Sports: Cheap travel insurance may not include all sports, such as skiing or certain watersports, so make sure your policy covers you for all the activities you and your family will be doing while you’re away.
  5. Lost passport/money: Would you have spare cash to replace these if they went missing? If not, make sure you’re travel insurance covers money and important travel documents.

Travelling in the UK? Cancellations, missed travel and your things going missing can also happen on UK holidays. Check your UK travel insurance covers you for these things.
