Buying or renewing your vehicle tax is simple at the Post Office.
Key benefits
- Quick: it only takes a few minutes to complete
- Instant: you can walk out of the branch with your tax disc in your hand
- Free: other than the tax disc itself, there are no charges
How it works
If you have a vehicle tax reminder (V11 form), bring it to your nearest vehicle licence-issuing Post Office branch along with:
- A valid insurance certificate or cover note, which must be valid on the date from which the tax disc starts or the date the tax disc is issued which ever is the later. Photocopies, renewal invitations, policy receipts or schedules cannot be used.
- A valid MOT (Vehicle Test Certificate) if required – your vehicle tax reminder will tell you if you need this. Your MOT must be valid on the date from which the tax disc starts or the date the tax disc is issued whichever is the later.
- For disabled vehicle tax, you need to bring a valid Exemption Certificate
If you’re not renewing your vehicle tax because you’re not planning to use your vehicle on public roads, you’ll need to get a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN). We can help with this too.
Paying for your tax disc
There are several ways you can pay:
- Cheque payable to Post Office Limited
- Debit card
- Cash (but not by post)
- Post Office Budget Card
- Postal Order
- Sterling travellers cheques
The rate of vehicle tax you pay depends on when your vehicle was first registered:
- Vehicles registered before 1 March 2001 pay according to their engine size
- Vehicles registered on or after 1 March 2001 pay according to their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and type of fuel used
Use the tables below to find the amount you'll need to pay for a 12-month or 6-month vehicle tax disc.
The rates apply from 1 April 2013
