Post Office Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Mail Group Ltd and operates under the Post Office® brand. Managing a nationwide network of around 12,000 Post Office® branches, we are the largest Post Office network in Europe and the largest retail branch network in the UK handling more cash than any other business.
Post Office® branches are for providing products and services that offer value for money and are valuable to customers' lives. Our reach means that over 93% of people live within a mile of a Post Office® branch and often visit us more than once a week - that’s about 31 million customer visits.
Around 337 Post Office® branches are directly managed by Post Office Ltd. The remaining branches are managed on an agency basis either by subpostmasters/mistresses or franchise partners. Some of our franchise partners include Tesco, SPAR and Londis.
Through our network, we sell around 170 products and services. Of the 2.7 billion transactions we carry out each year, the majority are for banking, leisure and postal services. Every year more than 500 million household bills are paid over our counters, over a million travel insurance policies are sold, and we are now the biggest provider of foreign currency in Britain.
Post Office Ltd is one of the three arms that make up the Royal Mail Group, along with Royal Mail and Parcelforce Worldwide. Post Office Ltd's Chief Executive and non-executive Chairman sit on the Group’s management board. Post Office Ltd has a Managing Director ( not a Chairman that sit on Group management board).
Serving you for centuries -our history through the post
No other postal service has the history we do…
We have a tradition of service stretching back over 360 years. We are proud of our history, which shows the amazing impact of our business on the lives of people in Britain and around the world. We have a great public service pedigree, with centuries of innovation and industry making our business what it is today.
In March 2004, Royal Mail Group developed an independent charitable trust to manage the heritage of all our brands (Royal Mail, Post Office® and Parcelforce Worldwide). The British Postal Museum & Archive (BPMA) is now working to increase public access to our nation’s postal history.
You can visit the BPMA in London to use The Royal Mail Archive – if you’re researching your family history you might find information on ancestors in the postal service. You can also see fascinating objects from our distant (and not-so-distant) past at the BPMA museum store on special open days.
Royal Mail holds a unique and important place in history, and we are delighted to be supporting the BPMA in their work.
