Check the size and weight of your letter or packet

The size, thickness and weight of the item you are sending will determine if it is a :

  • Letter
  • Large letter
  • Packet
  • Parcel

Letters:

 

Greeting cards, personal letters, postcards and C5 envelopes usually fall into the letter category.

Letter dimensions:

  • Length: 240mm max
  • Width: 165mm max
  • Thickness: 5mm max
  • Weight: 100g max

Large Letters:

 

The Large Letter format covers items like A4 documents, CDs and DVDs in their cases, some large greeting cards and most magazines.

Large Letter dimensions: 

  • Length: 353mm max
  • Width: 250mm max
  • Thickness: 25mm max
  • Weight: 750g max

Packets:

 

The Packet format includes items like clothes, shoes, posters, and books.

Packet dimensions:

  • Size limit for packets: 610mm x 460mm x 460mm max
  • Size limit posters or other rolled items: 900mm max length. The length plus twice the diameter must be no more than 1040mm.
  • Weight: there is no weight limit for items sent First Class. For Second Class, the item must be under 1000g.

Parcels:

 

If your item is over the maximum size or weight for the packet format, you will need to send it as a Parcel with Royal Mail Standard Parcels or Parcelforce Worldwide.

Parcel dimensions: 

  • Size limit: 1.5m and length/girth combined 3m
  • Weight: up to 20kg (Royal Mail) or 30kg (Parcelforce Worldwide)
