Wrongly delivered mail

What to do if you receive wrongly delivered mail

'Not known at this address'

If you get the odd item that’s come to your address by mistake, you can:

  • put it through the right letterbox if it’s close by
  • re-post it in any post box
  • hand it back to the postman or woman

Royal Mail deliver letters and parcels to 27 million homes and businesses across the UK. This is a big job and occasionally mistakes will happen.

If you receive post with your address but a different name, cross out your address, circle the return address (if there is one), write “not known at this address” on the envelope and repost it. If you know the person’s correct address, cross out your address, write the new address on the envelope and repost it.

If you keep getting wrongly delivered letters or parcels, let Royal Mail know and they’ll deal with the problem.
