When the Balearics beckon...
Over 2 million Brits visit the Balearic Islands every year. With hot summers and mild winters, this popular island group has plenty to offer all year round.
There are four main islands. Mallorca is the largest, and the largest in Spain overall. In the capital, Palma, you can visit the imposing gothic cathedral, browse in the many boutique shops, or watch the world go by in one of many street cafes. The island also has several good-sized towns dotted around the coast, accessible by public transport or easy to drive by car.
It’s known as the party island, with San Antonio in particular popular with clubbers, but Ibiza also offers quieter family resorts and plenty of history. You’ll find it not least in Ibiza’s Old Town area. There are a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and several Michelin Star restaurants on the island.
Menorca is larger than Ibiza but much less developed, so offers a quieter pace of life. It’s famed for its natural beauty, including the beautiful springtime display of wildflowers, and towns with pretty whitewashed buildings to stroll around.
The smallest of the main islands, Formentera, still has plenty to offer. Miles of white sandy beaches and clear waters make it appealing for those looking to relax or maybe try snorkelling or other water sports.
Remember to buy travel insurance to cover your trip. The Balearics’ currency is the euro and it’s worth changing money before your trip so you don’t pay over the odds. And prepaid prepaid travel money cards are a convenient alternative to carrying lots of cash.
