  • You can now set up a Direct Debit for vehicle tax in branch
Overview

Stuck in a jam with road tax?

Whether you’re in a hatchback or a HGV, a motorbike or a monster truck – the Post Office will get your vehicle tax sorted in no time.

How to renew

First, you’ll need one of the following:

  • Your V11
  • Your V85/1 if it’s a Heavy Good Vehicle (HGV)
  • Your V5C logbook
  • Your V5C/2 if you’ve just bought the vehicle

Bring one of these to your local Post Office branch. To find a local branch that can sort out vehicle tax, use our Branch Finder

If you don’t have any of these, then you need to apply for a fresh V5C. You need to fill out a V62 form, which you can pick up from Post Office branches. The cost is £25.

What else you’ll need

  • A valid MOT – it has to be valid from the date your vehicle tax starts or the date your vehicle tax is issued, whichever is later
  • A valid Exemption Certificate – if you claim disabled vehicle tax
  • A valid Reduced Pollution Certificate – if your vehicle has been modified for reduced pollution
  • A valid GVT or PSVC – if you need either of these, it’ll be mentioned on your vehicle tax reminder

If you’re in Northern Ireland, you’ll need to have a valid paper copy of either your certificate of insurance or a cover note. Your insurance needs to be valid from the date your vehicle tax starts or the date your vehicle tax is issued – whichever is later.

How to pay

When it comes to paying, you’ve got plenty of options:

  • Direct Debit
  • Cheque payable to Post Office Limited
  • Debit card
  • Cash (but not by post)
  • Post Office Budget Card
  • Postal Order
  • Sterling travellers cheques
  • Credit Card (N.B. Commercial/Corporate credit cards cannot currently be processed in branch.)

SORN

Are you planning to take your vehicle off the road?

Then you’ll need to make a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). This applies if you’re going to keep your vehicle in a garage, on a drive, or on private land.

Don’t worry – we can help.

How to apply

If you have your current V11 vehicle tax reminder form, you can arrange SORN by:

  1. Ticking the SORN declaration box on your V11 form
  2. Bringing your completed form to a vehicle licence-issuing Post Office branch

If you don’t have a V11 vehicle tax reminder, you’ll need a V5C instead. You can register SORN online or on the phone with your V5C by:

  • Using the www.gov.uk
  • Calling 0300 123 4321
  • Calling DVLA's Textphone number service on 0300 790 6201
