How far will my Hong Kong dollars go?

  • Hong Kong isn’t famous for its budget holidays, but by spending wisely you can still do things without breaking the bank. Or, if you’re planning the holiday of a lifetime, there’s more than enough high-end cultural fare on offer to keep you entertained for as long as you’re there

  • Accommodation and food are the main expenses, and both can be done cheaply – but Hong Kong isn’t a particular hotspot for backpackers. Of course, hostel stays are available, but you will have more choice if you aim for hotel accommodation

  • Beds in dorms can start from as little as £20 while budget hotel rooms can start from around £45. Get an Octopus card (the HK equivalent of London’s Oyster card) to keep travel costs down on the city’s world-leading public transport system

  • Noodle bars can offer cheap and delicious food and from there the sky’s the limit for what you can spend on fine dining. Hong Kong is a foodie’s dream, with its unique history and mix of cultural traditions all going into the pot of the city’s cuisine
