How far will your Egyptian pounds go?

  • A trip to Egypt is still relatively cheap, with good exchange rates on the Egyptian pound meaning your British sterling can go far. Make sure you stay safe in Egypt and buy travel insurance to protect you in case things go wrong

  • Budget travellers
For backpackers or those travelling on a budget it’s possible to get a flavour of Egypt from around £15 to £30 a day, staying in budget accommodation and sampling local street food such as Egyptian staples fava beans and falafel. Travel around the country is cheap, with trains between Cairo and Luxor costing as little as £3 to £4 for the ten-hour journey

  • Mid-range travellers
Staying in a basic hotel room with a private bathroom and fan and eating in local restaurants will cost between £15 and £20 a day, allowing for a bit of sightseeing and the odd daily treat. If you're heading to the beach book well in advance to get the best package deal or try a self-catering or bed-and-breakfast package

  • Luxury travellers
The main expense in Egypt is the entry into tourist sites. A complete visit to the Giza pyramids will set you back more than £30 in admission charges. Sharm el-Sheik is more westernised than other tourist destinations and many hotels and resorts will operate closer to western prices.

Some common questions

  • The Egyptian pound is the official currency of Egypt and the only one in use.

The Egyptian pound is divided into 100 piastres. Egyptian currency banknotes cover both piastres and whole pounds. The banknotes are 25 and 50 piastres, and 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 pounds. The smaller notes – ie those below E£5 – may be less common as they have been removed from and reintroduced to circulation. The coins are 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 piastres and 1 Egyptian pound.

You might hear some colloquial terms for various amounts of money. Bolbol and gondi for 1EGP, baku for 1,000EGP and arnab for 1,000,000 EGP.

  • Egypt is the only country whose official currency is the Egyptian pound, but it is unofficially used in the Gaza Strip too.

  • You’ve got a lot of options for buying Egyptian pounds with Post Office. The easiest is to order your travel money online, which will also give you our best rates.
