How Flight Delay Assistance Plus works

It's a benefit you and up to four fellow passengers named on your policy can enjoy. And it’s on top of the delayed departure cover already included in your premier travel insurance.

If your flight's delayed for one hour or more, we'll automatically issue your chosen benefit. Choose from access to 1,200+ LoungeKey lounges (1) in over 500 airports across 140 countries or an instant PayPal payout

What to do before you fly

  • Register flights no later than 24 hours before their scheduled departure. Don't forget your return flights

  • If your trip includes multiple flights, register each flight leg separately

  • Register yourself and up to four other passengers named on your policy

  • Make sure the names match those on the flight booking exactly

  • Choose your preferred benefit: a lounge voucher, where available, or a PayPal payout

If your flight’s delayed by an hour or more

  • We'll automatically issue your chosen benefit if a delay of one hour or more is announced (2)

  • We’ll send a free lounge access barcode by SMS or email. So you'll need a mobile device that can receive it

Register your flight

Log into your self-service account. Enter your policy number. Tell us if you’d like lounge access or a PayPal payment if you get delayed. And make sure you register both outbound and return flights

Common questions

  • Flight Delay Assistance Plus is an exclusive service that's included in Post Office Travel Insurance with our premier cover level. If your flight's delayed by one or more hours, it gives you free access to a LoungeKey™ airport lounge, where available. Or you can receieve an instant payment into a PayPal account, courtesy of us.

Just register online at least 24 hours before your scheduled departure time. Choose from the benefits available. Then, if your registered flight is delayed by one or more hours, we'll automatically issue your selected benefit. Please check our terms of use.

You can enjoy your benefit when a single delay of at least one hour is announced. It also applies if you're faced with several shorter, incremental delays that add up to the one-hour minimum.

  • You can only register for Flight Delay Assistance Plus through our self-service portal.

  • Flight Delay Assistance Plus is built to track almost all major commercial airline flights. But there are limitations when airlines or airports don't report data regularly.

You can register any flight where the airline accurately reports the announcement to FlightStats. If you try to register a flight that doesn't meet these conditions, the system will inform you of this and you won't be able to register.

Where the flight is departing from an airport with a lounge that's part of the LoungeKey network, you’ll be offered the choice of a lounge voucher or PayPal payout in the event of a delay.

Not every airport has a lounge. If this is the case the PayPal payment option will be selected for you.

  • Yes. You can include up to four additional passengers named on your Post Office Travel Insurance policy when you register. Make sure the names you register match those included on your flight booking or boarding passes exactly.

  • If you chose the lounge access benefit when registering your flight and you’re faced with a delay that qualifies, we’ll issue you a barcode. We’ll send this by SMS text or email, so make sure you’ve a mobile device to hand that can receive it. These messages are sent if:

    • You register the flight online at least 24 hours before its scheduled departure time
    • There's an announcement about a minimum one-hour delay (either a single delay or an accumulation of multiple shorter delays amounting to one or more hours)
    • You selected lounge as your benefit option

Notes

(1) There are a number of reasons why you might not be able to access the lounge - even if you have a valid voucher:

  • If the lounge is closed when the delay occurs – during the night, for instance or if the lounge is at full capacity

  • If the passenger names on the boarding passes don't exactly match those on the LoungeKey voucher

  • If you or a member of your group doesn't meet the lounge terms and conditions such as dress code or minimum age

Check our travel insurance FAQs and terms of use for more details

(2) This can be either one single period of delay or the minimum limit can be reached due to multiple incremental shorter delays.

(3) For economy, standard and premier policies, the single-trip policy will cover you for one trip up to:

  • 365 days for persons aged up to and including age 70

  • 90 days for persons aged between 71 and 75

  • 31 days for persons aged between 76 and above
