The Royal Mint

A great British institution and the home of the United Kingdom’s coins. The Post Office is in partnership with The Royal Mint.

About

The Royal Mint is one of the UK’s great institutions and one of the world’s oldest organisations, with a history stretching back over 1,100 years.

Our primary function has always been to produce and distribute the coins for Britain, and every United Kingdom coin used today has been made at The Royal Mint in Llantrisant. But we don’t just make coins for the pockets of the British public, in a typical year we strike coins for as many as 60 different countries worldwide.

In addition we produce coins for collectors, precious metal coins for investors, gifts for special moments in life, and official medals and seals. Our commemorative collections include our flagship Britannia and Sovereign coins, celebrate British greats such as Beatrix Potter, and mark important occasions like Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday. All are created using state-of-the-art technology, coupled with skills and techniques passed down over many centuries.

History

From the workshops of Anglo-Saxon London, to today’s modern minting facility in South Wales, The Royal Mint has consistently evolved, combining state-of-the-art technology and centuries of craftsmanship to lead the way in the world of coins and currency.

This heritage and reputation gives us the perfect platform on which to build for the future. Our commitment to excellence and innovation, which has driven us for over 1,100 years, is recognised around the world as an example of best practice in the industry.

Where is The Royal Mint?

The Royal Mint is based in Llantrisant, South Wales, around 15 minutes by car from junction 34 of the M4 motorway. The site was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1968, when our operations were transferred to Llantrisant from Tower Hill in readiness for the introduction of the decimal coinage.

Trained security staff oversee the security of the 35-acre site, which employs more than 900 people and operates around-the-clock for 52 weeks a year.

In 2016 we opened The Royal Mint Experience, where the public can get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how coins are produced and hear some surprising stories from our history. Our interactive exhibition and guided factory experience reveals the stories and people behind the coins in your pocket, and even gives visitors the opportunity to strike a coin.
