FAQs


Can I download as much as I like?

Yes. When we say totally unlimited, we mean exactly that. As an Unlimited Broadband customer, you’ll be able to upload and download freely, every month. There are no data caps, download limits or extra charges. And we don’t slow broadband speeds at peak times. We’re open and honest about our traffic management policies. How fast is Unlimited Broadband?


We’ll give you a download speed estimate before you confirm your Unlimited Broadband order. This will give the speeds your line should be capable of reaching under best possible conditions. Attach one device to your Wi-Fi router via an Ethernet cable and it should operate around the same speed. 

The actual speed of your Unlimited Broadband might be slower than the advertised speed or any download speed estimate we supply. 

Broadband speeds can be affected by a number of things: 

1. Where you live
2. The distance from the exchange to your phone line
3. Speed of similar lines in your area
4. Quality of your home wiring
5. Time of day you’re online
6. How many people are using your network at the same time
7. Interference from electrical devices like halogen lamps, speakers and baby monitors
 

How do I check download speeds?

There are three ways you can check how fast your Unlimited Broadband will be.
1. Online, using our speed checker and availability tool
2. In-branch. Find your nearest Post Office with our Branch Finder
3. Over the phone – call us on 0800 066 0514
 

Can I get Unlimited Broadband without a land line?

We can arrange line installation for you when you place your Unlimited Broadband order. We’ll arrange a date and time for an Openreach engineer to visit your home to install your new line. And discuss all costs with you before confirming your order.

How long does it take to install Unlimited Broadband?

As little as 10 working days from the time you confirm your order online, in-branch or over the phone. Provided you already have a working phone line at your home. If not, or we need to arrange new line installation, it may take longer. Switching from cable-based service providers like Virgin Media may also take longer.

Your welcome pack will include an estimated start date. We’ll send your pack within 5 working days of confirming your order.
 

Can I bar outgoing calls on my Home Phone line?

With Post Office Home Phone, you’ve got the option to block all outgoing calls on your line. To do so, just call our Customer Care Line – 0345 600 3210. You’ll still be able to take calls on your landline phone. And call emergency services such as 999 and 112.
 

How competitive are your call rates?

Check our price guide and see how much you could save with Post Office. Our call rates are amongst the lowest in the UK.

I want to keep my current phone number.

That’s usually fine. We’ll tell you if you can keep your number when you place your order. If network issues mean we can’t transfer your number, you’ll get the option of a new one. We’ll give you the expected switchover date or timeframe. It’s generally the go-live date specified in the welcome pack we send 5 working days after you confirm your order.

And if we can’t switch your number by the agreed date, you might be able to claim compensation. Check our Price Guide for details.
 

Do I cancel broadband or phone service with my current provider?

Not if you’re with BT, TalkTalk or Plusnet. We’ll handle the switcher and cancel on your behalf. If you’re with Virgin Media, don’t cancel their service before your Post Office Unlimited Broadband goes live.

What If I change my mind?

You may cancel your order any time up to 14 calendar days from the day after you place your order. If your service has already gone live, you may cancel your service at any time but may be subject to Early Termination Charges if your service has a minimum contract term. Broadband Speeds


Broadband speeds – things you need to know

Average speeds are based on the download speeds of at least 50% of our customer base at peak time (8pm-10pm) as at 01/07/2019. Speeds will vary depending on a number of different factors. Your exact speed estimate will be given at point of sale. We’ll estimate your download speed range when you check availability at your address. Speeds may be lower than the advertised average peak time speeds or any speed estimate we provide due to factors outside our control such as the distance your home is from the telephone exchange, the specification of your computer, the condition of the wiring in your home or other factors such electrical interference.
