And if that budget is tight, the best advice is to head east because five Eastern European cities top the best value barometer table. 

Key findings include:

  • Prices are cheapest in Prague for 12 drinks ranging from beer, wine and brandy to cocktails and spirits
  • Budapest, Krakow, Riga and Tallinn complete a clean sweep for Eastern European cities at the top of the barometer table
  • In Western Europe the best value to be had is in Palma, although prices for the 12 drinks surveyed are only around £1 extra in Berlin and Amsterdam

Holidaymakers on a celebration break can purchase Euros over the counter at more than 10,000 Post Office branches, while other currencies that feature in the Celebration Breaks Drinks Barometer are available on demand at over 1,600 branches. In total up to 80 currencies can be pre-ordered at all 11,500 Post Office branches or online for next day branch or home delivery.
