Taking out a Post Office Money Pre-Paid Funeral Plan allows you to freeze the cost of the funeral services in the plan at today's prices providing protection against potentially rising funeral costs.

The average cost of a funeral has risen by 26% in the past 5 years. Dignity predicts the average costs will rise to £4,913 by 2021. Every funeral has to be paid for at some point – but when you pay makes all the difference to how much you pay. Pre-paying for your funeral is a simple and quick way to put your affairs in order. By taking out a Post Office Money Pre-Paid Funeral Plan you will be able to choose the funeral you'd like by ensuring your wishes are recorded for loved ones.

Things to consider

We offer three funeral plans to choose from, each one covers the costs of the cremation funeral services as outlined in the plan. 

If a burial is required, the funeral director services in the plan are guaranteed but Minister's or Officiant's fee are not covered by the guarantee. This is because burial costs vary widely across the country, so cannot be guaranteed in the same way as a cremation. Instead a contribution of £1,200 (rising with inflation) will be made towards burial fees and any services provided by third parties (such as Minister's or Officiant's fees). If you change your mind and wish to cancel your plan, you have a 90 day cooling off period. If you cancel your plan within 90 days then a full refund will be made. For cancellations after 90 days a cancellation fee of £195 will be deducted from the monies refunded.

How it works

The Post Office Money Pre-Paid Funeral Plan is really straightforward to take out. You don't need to have a medical or answer any health questions. In fact, if you're aged 50 or over you are guaranteed to be accepted. There are no upper age limits, so you can be sure you will be able to take out the plan.

The steps below show you how it works. When the time comes, your family will only have to make one phone call. We will then arrange to put your plan in motion.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Choose a funeral plan to suit you. There are a choice of three plans to suit different budgets and requirements, all of which guarantee to cover the necessary costs of a cremation as outlined in the plan. For burial funerals, the funeral director services in the plan are guaranteed plus a contribution of £1,200 towards third party costs such as Minister's fees.
  2. Fix funeral costs at today's prices. You may pay in advance at today's prices, and no matter how far in the future the plan is needed there won't be any further costs for the services included in the plan.
  3. Payments you make go directly into the National Funeral Trust fund where the money required for the funeral is held securely and looked after until it is required. This is independent of Post Office Money and Dignity.
  4. Your plan is confirmed. You will receive a Welcome Pack to keep all the details in a safe place and share them with your family.
  5. Set out your personal wishes. Dignity keeps details of all your special wishes, for instance, how you would like your funeral to run or specific hymns you have in mind. You can specify, add or change your specific requirements at any point. Some special requests that are not included in the plan may incur an additional cost, such as flowers or memorials.   6. Caring support whenever it's needed. Your family will have access to a professional, caring funeral director who will guide and support your loved ones through all the arrangements.
  7. No more to pay. Once paid, your family won't have to pay any more for the guaranteed services as set out in the plan.

This is an example of some the services that are not included in our plans: 

  • Doctors or coroners fees.
  • Embalming, burial plot, memorial, headstone.
  • Minister's / Officiant's fee for a service at a different location before the cremation or burial.
  • Flowers / catering / wake.
  • Repatriation from outside mainland Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Isle of Man and Isle of Wight to the Nominated Funeral Director.
  • Costs associated with changes in regulations, tax, laws or generally accepted practice which result in additional costs or affect the conduct of the funeral.

Medical Certification Fees

For deaths where a coroner investigation is required, there are no medical certification fees. Also, changes to legislation in May 2015 mean there will no longer be a charge for a medical certification for any deaths registered in Scotland. Similar legal changes are being considered for the rest of the UK, so we do not include provision for these fees in our Plans. If the funeral takes places outside of Scotland, and a coroner is not involved, then if applicable, the medical certification fees must be paid by the next of kin or personal representative, when arranging the funeral.

If you change your mind and wish to cancel you plan, you have a 90 day cooling off period. If you cancel your plan within 90 days then a full refund will be made. For cancellations after 90 days a cancellation fee of £195 will be deducted from the monies refunded.
