International Driving Permits

Planning to drive on your next trip overseas? You can apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP) at the Post Office®. It costs just £5.50.

How do I use an International Driving Permit?

You can drive legally in many places overseas if you are carrying an International Driving Permit along with your UK driving licence.

To find out which kind of International Driving Permit you need, or whether you need one at all, see the latest IDP requirements by country (opens in a new window)

When using an International Driving Permit, remember:

  • you must carry your UK driving licence and passport along with your International Driving Permit
  • if you’re planning to hire a car while overseas it’s a good idea to confirm the rental conditions in advance – there may be additional requirements other than just carrying an International Driving Permit
  • an International Driving Permit is valid for 12 months, and can be post-dated up to 3 months from your application date
  • you must be 18 or over to apply for an International Driving Permit
  • you cannot use a UK-issued International Driving Permit to drive in the UK
  • if you’re travelling for reasons other than tourism, check the local regulations to see if you can use an International Driving Permit or if you need a local driving licence
