How do I use this online travel insurance service?
Getting a quote and buying your travel insurance online is quick and easy online:
- our Before you start section gives tips to help you choose the right cover
- then simply select the cover you need, where you are going to and for how long from options provided to create your quote
- you’ll have the chance to add any additional cover requirements
- you can email yourself a copy of the quote, or, once registered, save your quote retrieve it later

How much will my travel insurance cost?
You can buy travel insurance through the Post Office® for as little as £7. The cost of your policy will depend on the type of cover you require, how long you are away for and the number and age of people travelling.
Dependant children aged 18 or under are free. Non dependant children will receive 50% discount off the individual policy rate.

How can I pay?
You can pay online or over the phone using a Visa, Mastercard , Maestro or Delta. If you prefer to pay in cash, travel insurance can be issued at over 9,000 selected Post Office® branches.

How do I know what I'm covered for?
All our policies offer comprehensive cover for business and leisure trips as standard, including emergency medical expenses , cancellation and lost baggage. You can then customise your policy to include ski/winter sports, golf, hazardous activities, valuable equipment and extended trips, or to pay no excess charge. How do I know who is covered?
Any named person on the policy will be covered by our travel insurance. Families or couples can go on the same policy as long as you live at the same UK address.
Dependant children under 18 are covered for free as long as they are travelling with an adult parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt or legal guardian who has travel insurance from the Post Office®. The number of children who can be covered free is unlimited. If you’re travelling with someone else’s children, we’ll cover them each at 50% of the individual rate.
Our individual cover includes travel for business and leisure.

How long can I travel for?
If you plan to go away 2+ times in the next 12 months, you can save time and money with our annual multi-trip insurance. This will cover you for an unlimited number of trips, each up to a maximum of 31 days long. You are also covered for UK breaks (miniumum of 2 nights) and cancellations as soon as you book a trip.

How do I make a claim?

Can I buy Post Office® travel insurance if I don't live in the UK?
No, our policy covers UK residents (including the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) only.

Can I get cover if I have an existing medical condition?
It depends what it is. Check our health declaration section; if you are still unsure call the Post Office® Medical Screening Line on 0845 602 5275† quoting scheme code PTS2. You may have to pay an extra premium to include cover for certain medical conditions. They will tell you if they require more information.

What happens if there is a medical emergency when I'm away?
Your travel insurance includes a 24/7 worldwide emergency helpline:
+44 23 8064 4633 - if possible have some contact information with you so that we can keep in touch. Your cover includes extra accomodation and travel costs if you are too ill to travel or need to come home to the UK earlier. More information can be found in the

Which countries am I covered for?
When you get a quote for your travel insurance you’ll need to select the area for the country or counties you intend to holiday in. This will mean you’re only paying for the cover you need.
The areas are:
- UK –includes England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands
- Europe -encompasses all European Union countries including Iceland, Ireland, some former Soviet Union countries, islands in the Mediterranean, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Madeira, the Azores, and the Canary Islands
- Worldwide - excluding USA, Canada and the Caribbean – includes Europe, Asia, Australasia and South America, but excludes USA, Canada and Caribbean countries.
- Worldwide – including USA, Canada and the Caribbean (Area 4). This covers all destinations worldwide

If my partner and I live at separate addresses can we still buy family cover?
No, you need to buy separate policies. Partners need to be at the same UK address to be able to buy family cover.

Can I buy travel insurance if I'm pregnant?
Yes, as long as you are not travelling against the advice of a doctor. But you must return home before the end of the 32nd week of pregnancy. That means 8 weeks before the due date.

Is there an age limit?
Policy holders should be 18 or over unless they are a lone parent travelling with dependent children. There is no upper age limit to our single trip insurance though if you are 75 or over, please call us free on 0800 294 2292. The age limit for annual multi-trip insurance is 65.

Are water sports covered?
Yes, our standard policy covers scuba diving up to 30m, yachting in coastal waters, jet skiing, jet boating, water skiing, canoeing/white water rafting to cat 2, deep sea fishing, windsurfing, surfing and swimming. Check the list in our policy or phone us on 0800 294 2292 if you’re unsure.

No, it is not included on our standard policy. You would need to take out additional hazardous activities cover.

If I get hurt while I'm skiing but do not have ski/winter sports cover, would I still be able to claim for medical expenses?
No, you would not be covered for medical expenses. Winter sports are excluded from our standard policy. You would need to buy additional ski/winter sports cover.

Yes, if you are with a qualified guide or instructor you are covered for off-piste skiing.

Are the benefits per person?
Yes where there is more than one person on the policy benefits are per person unless stated otherwise. Where there is an excess charge payable this is also per person.

What is the excess fee?
If you make a claim, the excess is the amount that you have agreed to pay towards the claim. This is usually £50, though not all claims require an excess fee. You can pay an extra amount with your policy so that you do not have to pay an excess if you claim. Select “No excess fee” when you get a quote to see how much this would be for you.

What happens if I take out Post Office® travel insurance and then change my mind?
You can cancel this policy within 14 days from the date you receive the policy wording booklet and policy schedule. We will then refund your premium in full. No refund of premium is available after the 14 day period. Call us on 0800 294 2292† if you wish to cancel.
If you wish to upgrade from single to annual insurance, extend the area which you are covered for or add any additional cover after your purchase call 0800 294 2292 to make these changes.

We can settle simple claims in 5 working days providing we have all the right information. We will reply to all claims within 5 days and let you know what is happening.

What happens if I take out an annual multi-trip policy and then want to change my cover?
If you would like to extend your annual mulit-trip policy, for example to include ski/winter sports, increase the amount your valuable equipment is covered for, or increase the length of your trips from 31 to 45 days, then call us on 0800 294 2292.
