How to apply for your car tax disc at the Post Office®

If you own a vehicle and use it on the road then you will need a car tax disc, also known as a motor vehicle licence. You can apply for your car tax disc at the Post Office®, by post or at your local DVLA office.

If you’re not renewing your car tax disc because you’re not planning to use your vehicle on public roads, you’ll need a SORN – we can help with that too.

If you can’t use a car tax disc reminder for whatever reason, you’ll need to bring the documents listed above to a Motor Vehicle Licence issuing Post Office® branch. Also bring the registration document (V5C) or tear-off portion (V5C/2) if you bought your vehicle in the last 8 weeks.

If you have a car tax disc reminder (V85/1 form), you need to renew your car tax disc at a DVLA local office.

How to pay for your car tax
If you apply for a car tax disc at a Post Office® branch or by post you can pay by:

  • cheque payable to Post Office Limited
  • debit card
  • cash (but not by post)
  • Post Office® saving stamps
  • Postal Order
  • sterling travellers cheques

You can no longer pay your car tax at the Post Office® with Motor Vehicle Licence savings stamps, but they can be used at DVLA local offices (link opens in a new window) or you can claim a refund from DVLA, Swansea.
