Over 50's Life Cover FAQs

Answers to some of your most common questions

How flexible is it?

The Post Office Over 50's Life Cover is not designed to be flexible which is why the premiums you will pay and the guaranteed sum paid out are fixed, and will never change.

What are the charges?

The charges are included in your premium and cover the cost of:

  1. Guaranteeing to provide your life cover, whatever your state of health.
  2. Commission and expenses.

Can I change my mind?

If you change your mind and cancel the plan within the first 30 days then we will refund any premiums paid. If you decide to cancel after the first 30 days then you will not get anything back.

Please contact Aviva on 0845 300 5841,
Monday - Friday 8:00am - 8:00pm, Saturday 9:00am- 6:00pm, or write to:
Post Office Over 50s Life Cover
PO Box 520
Norwich
NR1 3WG

What if I stop paying?

Your cover will end 30 days after the date the last premium was due, and you won't get anything back.

Can my partner take out cover?

Yes. Cover is available to anyone who is a permanent UK resident aged between 50 and 80 and has not already exceeded the premium limits. Please note, it is not possible to have more than one person on each policy, and as such your partner’s application will create a separate policy.

When will the plan not pay out?

The fatal accident benefit will not be paid if a claim results from:

  • Your taking part in a criminal act
  • A self-inflicted injury, alcohol or drug abuse
  • Flying, except as a passenger in a commercially licensed aircraft
  • Your engagement in certain hazardous pursuits
  • War or civil commotion
  • Whilst you are living outside Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.

Full details of the exclusions can be found in section 2 and 3 of the plan Terms & Conditions.

What about tax?

The cash sum paid on death is currently free from personal liability to income tax and capital gains tax.

What is the Funeral Benefit Option?

The Funeral Benefit Option is an additional benefit available free of charge with our Over 50s Life Cover. If selected this option enables the fixed lump sum from your Over 50s Life Cover plan to be paid directly to The Co-operative Funeralcare. This sum is then used to help pay towards the costs of your funeral.

Funeral Benefit options FAQs

Why select the Funeral Benefit Option?

The Funeral Benefit Option can give you added peace of mind, knowing that the fixed lump sum from your Over 50's Life Cover will be paid directly towards your funeral costs, with The Co-operative Funeralcare – a name you can trust and the UK’s largest Funeral Director. With The Co-operative Funeralcare you can record requests you may have regarding your funeral to ensure it’s just the way you want it to be.

As a special thank you, when you select the Funeral Benefit Option, The Co-operative Funeralcare will donate an additional £250 Contribution towards the final cost of your funeral.

Should I tell my loved ones I have taken out the Funeral Benefit Option?

Yes, by keeping your loved ones/person who will be arranging your funeral informed it will enable them to use the fixed lump sum from your Over 50s Life Cover Plan towards the cost of your funeral, receive the additional £250 contribution and arrange your funeral the way you would have liked, including any personal requests that you may have specified. If they aren’t aware at the time that you have selected the Funeral Benefit Option within your plan and your funeral is arranged with someone other than The Co-operative Funeralcare your fixed lump sum will be paid to your estate and the £250 contribution will not apply. Once you have chosen the Funeral Benefit Option, you will receive a ‘Documents Folder’ from The Co-operative Funeralcare. This will contain additional details about the Funeral Benefit Option and the information you will need to provide to your loved ones or those arranging your funeral.

How does the Funeral Benefit Option work?

You can select the Funeral Benefit Option on your Post Office Money Over 50's Life Cover by completing an Application Form and ticking the associated selection box.  Alternatively, you can select the Funeral Benefit Option over the phone when setting up your plan direct with Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the product provider for Post Office Money Over 50's Life Cover.

The Co-operative Funeralcare will then send you a ‘Documents Folder’. This folder will contain all the information you need, including a Funeral Requests Form, and the information you need to pass on to the person arranging your funeral.

When the time comes, the person arranging your funeral will then need to contact the Co-operative Funeralcare team and notify them of your death. The team will then let them know where their nearest Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Director is based and help arrange an appointment to allow them to make your chosen funeral arrangements.

The Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Director will be paid automatically from the fixed lump sum of your Post Office Money Over 50's Life Cover. If the cost of your funeral is less than the fixed lump sum and the additional £250 Contribution combined, your representative will be able to claim any outstanding balance from Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the provider of yourPost Office Money Over 50's Life Cover Plan. However, if the cost of the funeral is more than the combined amount, the person arranging your funeral will need to pay the balance to the Funeral Director at the time of need.

What is the additional £250 contribution?

The additional £250 contribution is a donation from The Co-operative Funeralcare as a special thank you for choosing the Funeral Benefit Option. The £250 contribution is taken off the final cost of your funeral.

How can the contribution from The Co-operative Funeralcare be used?

The contribution can be used for funerals carried out in mainland Great Britain and Northern Ireland when the funeral is arranged and conducted by The Co-operative Funeralcare or other participating Co-operative Society or affiliated Funeral Director. For details of your nearest funeral home call The Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Planning Team on 0845 602 7897.

To receive the contribution towards the cost of the funeral, the person arranging your funeral must give the Certificate included in the “Documents Folder” provided by The Co-operative Funeralcare to the Funeral Director. The contribution is only valid for the Policyholder's funeral and only one contribution can be used towards the cost of the funeral.

Is it possible to cancel the Funeral Benefit Option once it is set up?

Yes, just write marking the letter for the attention of Customer Services at the following address:

Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited
PO Box 520
Norwich
NR1 3WG

Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the provider of your Post Office Money Over 50s Life Cover Plan, will inform The Co-operative Funeralcare that you would like to cancel the arrangement and your Over 50s Life Cover plan will continue as normal. Under these circumstances, The Co-operative Funeralcare would have no obligation to provide your funeral services and the contribution would not be valid. It’s important to remember that, once the option to pay the proceeds of your Post Office Money Over 50s Life Cover Plan towards a funeral with The Co-operative Funeralcare has been cancelled it cannot be reinstated on the same plan or any other plan.

Can I add the Funeral Benefit Option to an existing Over 50s Life Cover Plan?

If you already have an Over 50s Life Cover Plan and do not have the Funeral Benefit Option with this or any other plan, you can add the Funeral Benefit Option to your Over 50s Life Cover Plan. To do this simply call, the customer service team on 0800 096 5531, with the policy number of the plan you want to update. Please remember that you can only add the Funeral Benefit Option to one plan.

What if I want to add the Funeral Benefit Option to more than one Over 50s Life Cover Plan?

You can only add the Funeral Benefit Option to one Over 50s Life Cover Plan.

What if I want to arrange for the proceeds of a policy from another insurance provider to be paid towards a funeral with The Co-operative Funeralcare?

You can only use a single policy for this purpose, whether this is a Post Office policy or a policy from another insurance provider with whom The Co-operative Funeralcare offer this facility.

Are there any extra charges involved in adding Funeral Benefit Option to my Over 50s Life Cover Plan?

There’s no set up charge, no application fee and no hidden costs. Plus, you or the person arranging your funeral can cancel the Funeral Benefit Option at any time if you decide that it isn’t right for you.

What happens if I die within the first year of taking out my Over 50s Life Cover Plan?

The fixed lump sum from your plan is not paid out in the first year of cover. Instead Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the provider of your Over 50s Life Cover Plan, will pay the benefit payable under the Terms and Conditions of your Over 50s Life Cover to your estate or nominated beneficiary and not to The Co-operative Funeralcare. The person arranging your funeral will still be able to use The Co-operative Funeralcare contribution towards the funeral costs, provided the funeral is being arranged by The Co-operative Funeralcare, other Co-operative Society Funeral Home, or affiliated Funeral Directors.

What happens if once I’ve selected the Funeral Benefit Option, I stop paying the premiums?

It is important to keep paying your premiums. Please refer to the Key Facts in your Policy Documents for details of what would happen to your Over 50s Life Cover Plan if you stopped paying your premiums. If you miss any of your premiums and your Over 50s Life Cover Plan ceases as a result, The Co-operative Funeralcare will not receive any payment towards your funeral costs and they will not provide the Contribution towards the cost of your funeral.

If I select the Funeral Benefit Option with my Over 50s Life Cover Plan, would the policy still pay out double the fixed lump sum if I die as a result of an accident?

Yes. Provided you continue to pay your premiums when due and subject to the policy Terms and Conditions, your Over 50s Life Cover plan will still pay out double the fixed lump sum if you were to die as a result of an accident on or after the first year of the plan being in force. If the person organising your funeral decides to use The Co-operative Funeralcare for the funeral they would still be entitled to The Co-operative Funeralcare contribution, and the original fixed lump sum amount would be paid to The Co-operative Funeralcare to put towards the cost of your funeral.  The additional £250 contribution will be added to the fixed lump sum from your Over 50s Life Cover plan by The Co-operative Funeralcare. Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the provider of your Post Office Over 50s Life Cover Plan would pay the additional sum assured, due as a result of the death being the result of an accident, to your estate or nominated beneficiary.

The charges are included in your premium and cover the cost of:

  1. Guaranteeing to provide your life cover, whatever your state of health.
  2. Commission and expenses.

Who provides the funeral service?

The Co-operative Funeralcare, the UK’s largest Funeral Director with access to 1,100 Co-operative owned funeral homes across the country, other participating Co-operative Society Funeral Homes, or affiliated Funeral Directors will conduct the funeral.

What if the person arranging my funeral arranges and pays for my funeral with another Funeral Director and doesn’t know about my arrangement with The Co-operative Funeralcare?

The money that would have been paid to The Co-operative Funeralcare would simply be paid to your estate or nominated beneficiary by Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the provider of your Over 50s Life Cover Plan. The additional £250 contribution from The Co-operative Funeralcare would not be valid.

What if the person arranging my funeral wants to use the policy proceeds for my funeral with someone other than The Co-operative Funeralcare?

If the person arranging your funeral decides not to use The Co-operative Funeralcare to arrange your funeral, they can write marking the letter for the attention of Customer Services at the following address:

Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited
PO Box 520
Norwich
NR1 3WG

Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the provider of your Over 50s Life Cover Plan, will then remove the Funeral Benefit Option from your plan and will inform The Co-operative Funeralcare that they have cancelled the Funeral Benefit Option. The proceeds from your policy would be paid to your estate or nominated beneficiary by Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited. The additional £250 contribution from The Co-operative Funeralcare would no longer be valid.

When and how is a funeral with The Co-operative Funeralcare paid for?

The person arranging your funeral will need to provide The Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Director with your original Certificate of Entitlement and a copy of your death certificate. The Funeral Director will then access the details of any personal requests you have registered with your plan and help make the funeral arrangements accordingly. The person arranging your funeral will then be issued with a detailed estimate of any funeral costs before the final funeral arrangements are made.

The Funeral Director will confirm the full fixed lump sum (provided that your Over 50s Life Cover Plan has been in place for more than 12 months) and the additional £250 Co-operative Funeralcare Contribution. These two amounts together will then be put towards your funeral costs. If there is an outstanding balance to pay for the agreed funeral arrangements, this will need to be paid by the person arranging your funeral at the appropriate time.

What happens if the total of my Over 50s Life Cover Plan from the Post Office and the additional £250 Contribution from The Co-operative Funeralcare is greater than the cost of providing my funeral through The Co-operative Funeralcare at the time?

If the total amount available is more than the cost of providing your funeral, your representative would be able to claim the outstanding balance from Aviva Life & Pensions UK Limited, the provider of your Post Office Over 50s Life Cover Plan.

Example: If your Over 50s Life Cover Plan fixed lump sum paid out £3,400, and the final cost of your funeral is £2,750 less the £250 contribution (£2,750 - £250 = £2,500), The Co-operative Funeralcare would only require £2,500 from your Over 50s Life Cover Plan. The remaining balance of £900 (£3,400 - £2,500 = £900) would be paid to your estate.

What happens if the total of my Over 50s Life Cover Plan and the £250 Co-operative Funeralcare contribution is less than the actual cost of my funeral?

The person arranging your funeral will need to arrange payment of the balance to the Funeral Director at the time of arranging your funeral.

Example: If your Over 50s Life Cover Plan fixed lump sum paid out £2,300, and the final cost of your funeral is £2,750 less the £250 Contribution (£2,750 - £250 = £2,500), the person arranging your funeral would need to arrange for the remaining balance of £200 (£2,300 - £2,500 = -£200) to be paid to the Funeral Director.

By selecting the Funeral Benefit Option with my Over 50s Life Cover Plan, am I buying a Funeral Plan from The Co-operative Funeralcare?

No, if you decide to select the Funeral Benefit Option with your Over 50s Life Cover Plan you are requesting that you would like the fixed lump sum from your plan and the additional £250 Co-operative Funeralcare contribution to be used to pay towards your funeral. With an Over 50s Life Cover Plan the details of a funeral are not selected in advance like they would be if a Funeral Plan is purchased.  However, by selecting the Funeral Benefit Option you are provided the opportunity to record requests you may have regarding your funeral to ensure it’s just the way you want it to be.

What funeral services are included once I have selected the Funeral Benefit Option?

No specific funeral services are included. All arrangements are made by the person arranging your funeral when the time comes. They will be advised by the Funeral Director of any personal requests held by The Co-operative Funeralcare. Your local Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Director will be able to give advice on any information you need to help with your requests.

How will The Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Director help when the time comes?

The Co-operative Funeralcare Funeral Director will take care of all the practical arrangements, advising on the options and choices for the funeral. They will help oversee that the arrangements are made in accordance with your wishes and those of the person arranging your funeral.

The Funeral Director will assist in the completion of documentation and make all necessary arrangements with officiating clergy, cemeteries or crematoria, as required. The Funeral Director will provide help with those personal touches such as selecting special flowers, placing newspaper notices and arranging refreshments after the funeral. They will ensure that the person arranging your funeral receives complete support at all times.

What if I die abroad?

If you die abroad and wish to have your funeral conducted in mainland Great Britain or Northern Ireland, The Co-operative Funeralcare team will be able to arrange repatriation to the UK. Provided that your funeral is to be arranged with The Co-operative Funeralcare, the Funeral Benefit Option on your Over 50s Life Cover Plan and the additional £250 contribution would still apply.

The Funeral Director will advise your representatives on the repatriation costs (please note that repatriation costs can vary widely dependent upon the circumstances) and these charges will be included in the total amount of your funeral costs.

What happens if the contract is terminated between Aviva, the provider of the Post Office Over 50s Life Cover Plan, and The Co-operative Funeralcare?

The Co-operative Funeralcare would still provide the funeral where possible. However, if The Co-operative Funeralcare were unable to, the fixed lump sum would be paid to your estate on your death and the additional £250 contribution would not apply.

What happens if The Co-operative Funeralcare goes out of business?

In the unlikely event that The Co-operative Funeralcare goes out of business, they would remove the Funeral Benefit Option, would not conduct your funeral and the additional £250 contribution would no longer apply. Your Post Office Over 50s Life Cover Plan would continue as normal and the fixed lump sum would be paid to your estate on your death.
