Additional charges
Why you may need to pay extra to receive your mail from Royal Mail
There are 2 reasons why you may need to pay to receive your mail
- the sender didn't pay enough to cover the postage
- the letter or parcel has come from abroad and there’s a Customs charge
Royal Mail can't deliver these items to you, but we will keep them safe at your local Post Office®. We’ll send you a ‘Fee to pay’ card letting you know how much you owe. This fee is based on the item’s weight and how much it should have cost to send. There’s also a £1 administration charge.
How to receive your mail
There are two ways to get your post:
- Stick stamps covering the cost of delivering the item onto the “Fee to pay” card and post it
- Go to your Royal Mail delivery office shown on the 'Fee to pay' card with your payment and collect your mail
You need to contact Royal Mail within 21 days (seven days for Recorded Signed For™) or the item will be returned to sender.
Letters or parcels from abroad sometimes have a Customs charge – for example VAT, or fees for tobacco or alcohol. Occasionally there’s an £8 handling charge.
