Applying for vehicle tax at the Post Office®
If you have a vehicle tax reminder (V11 form), bring this form to your nearest Vehicle Licence issuing Post Office® branch along with:
- a valid insurance certificate or cover note – photocopies, renewal invitations, policy receipts or schedules cannot be used
- a valid MOT (Vehicle Test Certificate) if required – your vehicle tax reminder will tell you if you need this. Your MOT must be valid on the date from which the tax disk starts or the date the tax disk is issued whichever is the later.
- for disabled vehicle tax class, you need to bring a valid Exemption Certificate

How to apply for your vehicle tax disc at the Post Office®
If you own a vehicle and use it on the road then you will need vehicle tax, also known as a motor vehicle licence. You can apply for your vehicle tax at the Post Office®, by post or at your local DVLA office.
If you’re not renewing your vehicle tax because you’re not planning to use your vehicle on public roads, you’ll need a SORN – we can help with that too.
If you can't use a vehicle tax reminder (V11) for whatever reason and wish to tax your vehicle, you’ll need to:
- bring the documents listed above to a Vehicle Licence [VL] issuing Post Office ® branch along with your V5C Registration Certificate.
- if you have purchased the vehicle within the last eight weeks and don’t have the full V5C, but do have the green tear off slip V5C/2 new keeper supplement, take it along and tax at an VL issuing Post Office ® branch.
- if you purchased your vehicle more than eight weeks ago but don’t have the full V5C, you need to buy your tax disc from a DVLA Local Office.
- if you do not have the full V5C or the V5C/2, then you can only buy your tax disc from a DVLA Local Office.
If you have a renewal reminder (V85/1 form) for lorries and buses, you need to renew vehicle tax at a DVLA local office.
