You can use your own envelope, to send Special Delivery items to HM Forces overseas, but you must send items containing money or jewellery (as defined by Royal Mail) in Special Delivery prepaid envelopes, available from your local Post Office™ branch. This is actually a requirement, should you want to claim compensation for any potential loss or damage en route.
If you are sending valuable mail to an address without a BFPO number you should use International Signed at normal postal rates.
